Movement 2007 Vlog: Welcome To Techno City
Bill Holland (aka Mr. Automatic) and Joe Vortech travel to the birthplace of Techno for Movement 2007: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival. The festival was originally begun by Carl Craig in 2000 as a world venue for new electronic music. After several shaky and uncertain years, the festival has finally emerged as a travel destination point for techno-heads worldwide.
Altough the festival had acts ranging from ambient to ghettotech, the main focused remained prominently on techno. Detroit is known worldwide for being the home of original techno acts Cybotron, Model 500, Rhythm is Rhythm, Blake Baxter, Eddie Folkes, Inner City, and DJ Jeff Mills among others. Although famous throughout Europe, Japan, and other countries, many of these producers and DJs are still not very well known in their hometown.
Moreso than in past years, the 2007 festival served as a playground for enough live acts to fill up more than %50 of the schedule. Ableton Live featured prominently in this, as did the classic Roland TB-303, and Robert Rich's MOTM.
BILL HOLLAND: Hey everybody. This is Bill Holland with Gearwire.Com. We're at DEMF 2007 in Detroit. I'm with Joe Vortech, my assistant.
JOE VORTECH: I'm not just an assistant. I'm assisting him today. Usually, we work in tandem.
Is this on?
BILL HOLLAND: So we're going to have several interviews these weekend with Blake Baxter...
BLAKE BAXTER: [BLAKE BAXTER IMITATING "BLEEP" MUSIC]
BILL HOLLAND: ...Pole, and a bunch of other artists.
[SOULDESIGNER AND SPIRITCATCHER LAUGHING]
BILL HOLLAND: We're going to be talking specifically about the demise of the CD and the division between vinyl and digital.
MR. DE: The CD is a blank cassette. [LAUGHING]
BILL HOLLAND: And we'll be also talking to people about live performance specifically because this year, I believe, we have more live artists than we've had in the past, correct?
JOE VORTECH: Absolutely. More live artists than I've ever seen at an electronic music festival.
BILL HOLLAND: And it seems like a good deal pursuing with Ableton. You've noticed that as well.
JOE VORTECH: Live, they're definitely doing the live thing with Ableton Live. It's a great sequencing program. I'm not a Live performer in that sense so I'm actually not all that familiar with Ableton but from what I know, virtually everyone who does do live acts likes Ableton.
BILL HOLLAND: And it seems like really we're not seeing that many laptop DJs. We're seeing either vinyl DJs or laptop producers or analog producers in the case of like Baxter, but he's also using digital I mean he's --
JOE VORTECH: He's using everything.
BILL HOLLAND: So it's going to be a good weekend here in Detroit, and we'll keep you up to date as to what's going on. See you soon at Gearwire.Com.
JOE VORTECH: Yup.
