Evolution UC-33 And Ableton Live Conrol D. Diggler's DJ Set

July 06, 2007
D. Diggler plays Movement 2007 with Ableton Live

D. Diggler has been producing for Raum Muzik since 1998. Since then, he has put out numerous recordings, never pigeonholing himself into a set sound.

At Movement 2007, he was performing live with a laptop and two Evolution UC-33s. In this commentary track, Gearwire's Bill Holland talks a little about the setup that he was using at DEMF. Hopefully, this gives some insight into how live DJ sets work with Ableton Live.

D. Diggler is signed to Raum Musik, Germany.

BILL HOLLAND: Okay, so this video is from Movement 2007. What you're seeing here is D. Diggler. He's a DJ doing a mostly DJ set from what I remember. He has two UC-33 Evolution boards. These are the older ones, not the new green, but the last model they released. He has two of these running with Ableton Live, and what you can't really see is that he's using one essentially for each side of deck, so like each one represents what would normally be either a vinyl turntable or a CDJ.

You'll notice that each of the boards has multiple sliders on it like you would find on a mixer, and these correspond to Ableton. The evolution UC-33 actually has the ability to map directly to Ableton, so you set it up and it's already mapped to the controls there.

Now, for what he's doing, for this type of techno this is perfect because he's playing various loops and able to bring them in and out using the sliders. You'll notice a lot of what he's doing is tweaking EQ and bringing things in and out.

Now, one thing I was surprised by was if I was DJing with that many channels, you would think you would see more people trying to really, really push the boundaries of how many of those you can have open at once, and I guess it really comes down to the face that realistically you're not going to be able to use that many and have it sound good.
