Robert Rich talks to us in this third installment of our Movement 2007 interview. He talks about his philosophy on music distribution and where he sees it going. Much of his music is still available on CD, but you can also purchase many of his digital downloads via the internet.
Also, stay tuned to later in the clip when he plays and electric slide guitar through his elaborate effects setup. As always, the MOTM Modular System dominates his setup.

BILL HOLLAND: I didn't ask you this earlier but your music, is it only available online or is it in CD format or vinyl? What's your philosophy on that and do you think it is going to go all digital soon or you think it will be a sort of a hybrid of formats?
ROBERT RICH: It's hard to say what the future holds. My music's been coming out for -- Actually, my first album came out around 25 years ago, and it's been in all sorts of formats. All my stuff comes out on CD. I've got two DVDs out, one that's seven hours long and the other that has film and surround mix on it, and the problem I have with the current state of the digital downloads is that the quality isn't very good. The MP3 compression or even the iTunes is really not CD quality, and I'm sort of a quality nut. I've really, really put a lot of attention into the texture and to the ambiences, the sound stage, and that stuff just gets all crunchy with the compression, so I'm looking forward to a time when downloads are at full resolution or even better than CD which is not technically impossible. It's just a question of bandwidth, so you know I'm very much currently still behind the idea of compact discs for the quality.
BILL HOLLAND: And I would have to agree. I mean we're waiting to see uncompressed come out online but it's going to require a lot more bandwidth that's completely different system of delivery for that to happen. Well, thank you very much for coming out and talking with us.
ROBERT RICH: Thanks a lot. It's a pleasure.
BILL HOLLAND: This is Bill Holland for Gearwire.Com, and we'll be back with another episode from Movement 2007.
