Ableton Live And Serato Enhance Live Sets For Spirit Catcher And Soul Designer: Part II
Fabrice Lig (aka Soul Designer) and Spirit Catcher have been releasing music for a while now. Stopping by Buzz Bar around 1am, I managed to grab them by 3:00am for a quick interview while we all sobered up*.
The event was produced by Profound Sound Productions, a comprehensive event management company from Detroit. They introduced us to Fabrice and Spirit Catcher, and we had a great talk about producing with Ableton, Djing with Serato, and why vinyl is still the most tactile DJ tool on the planet.
This is our second interview in the series. In the second half, we talk Ableton Live and find out why so many DJs are still vinyl nuts.
*-listen carefully for the espresso machine in the background.
BILL HOLLAND: So it's a matter of like what you prefer, I mean you prefer vinyl obviously.
SOUL DESIGNER: Yeah. I like vinyl. You know, I started to do DJing a long time ago and I feel comfortable with the vinyl, and yeah I like the system like Serato or Final Scratch. I used to play with Final Scratch but I don't like to -- When I'm playing I like to be really cool and you know when I was playing with that kind of system, I was a bit stressed because of you have to take care about the systems, just check if everything's fine and then you cannot put 100% of energy into your set. For me, I need vinyl to be really at the maximum of my capacity, so I would just play a CD because it's easier when you add some new tracks or some people send me some tracks through some digital stuff from the net, so yeah I need to play CD too but vinyl is what I prefer.
BILL HOLLAND: So that's about half and half. It's a matter of preference, depending on what you feel like using. It just seems like that.
SOUL DESIGNER: Yeah true. With vinyl, it's yeah you know it's something like physical, you know. It's like what I played during the night, you know. You -- I don't know how to explain it. It's just easier I think. It's more instinctive to me. I don't have to think. I don't like to think about too many things when I'm playing, just playing, just thinking about music. I don't like to think about technique, you know, and when you're playing some other stuff than vinyl, you'l have to think sometimes too much about technique and I can't do that.
BILL HOLLAND: All right guys. It's pretty late here in Detroit so we're going to head home but my name's Bill Holland for Gearwire.Com, and I think both Spirit Catcher and Soul Designer for being with me. Thanks guys.
SOUL DESIGNER: Yeah. Thank you.
SPIRIT CATCHER: Thank you. Thank you very much.
BILL HOLLAND: All right everybody. Have a good night.
