Digidesign Digi 002: Oh, What A Difference A Mod Makes

April 15, 2008
Black Lion Audio Digi 002 Mod

It's shootout time again, and this time we're firing on location with Matt Newport from Black Lion Audio. We compare one of his modified Digi 002 systems to one that hasn't yet been touched, and anyone with ears can hear the difference.

Matt explains why the Black Lion Audio modified Digi 002 sounds more powerful and crisply defined.

[DRUMMER TESTING OUT/TRACKING DRUMS]

MATT NEWPORT: The sound sample that you're about to hear is a kick, snare, high tom, and mid tom. These were tracked into a modified 002 using a Vintech on the kick and the snare, and using a modified SM Pro on the toms, and the D/A that you're hearing it back through is the modified 002 D to A and then we're going to switch to an unmodified 002 to kind of give you some idea what the sonic differences are between the two so.

[MATT NEWPORT PLAYING BACK DRUM TRACKS FROM MODIFIED 002]

All right, so this take is out of an unmodified 002, full volume out, 0 dB or +15 dB on the analog world, so here we go.

[MATT NEWPORT PLAYING BACK DRUM TRACKS FROM UNMODIFIED 002]

Now there's a couple of things that play here. Number one, you'll notice that the first one has a lot more extended low end, it actually sounds louder, you get a lot more definition out of the snares, a lot more detail. First of all, the first one has a different power supply in it. It's operating at a much higher voltage rail so we're seeing much more headroom in the analog stage. In fact, there's actually a 20-dB difference between the two, which is quite a bit. Well the other things that's going on is that the signal path actually has better quality capacitors in it because they have lower impedance than the original ones and a lot more of the transients come through, a lot more of the nuance of the performance. Another thing that's different is that we have a proprietary method of configuring the converter circuit itself. This is something that you're not going to find produced anywhere. It's a method that we developed in-house. One of the effects that it gives you is lower resonance in the power supply line and that resonance, when that resonance is actually present, it will translate into the audio realm, and so because there's lower resonance in the modified one, you get a little bit more smoother extended high end. So and then finally the last thing is the clock. The clock that we have designed into these, I think it has about 1 picosecond of jitter which is -- that's pretty good. Typically what you'll see in most commercial systems is, most good ones, is the clock has about 10 to 20 picoseconds. More of the less expensive like mass-produced gear usually has in the nanoseconds and on up, so what happens when a clock has less jitter is that there is less phase cancellation that occurs during the conversion process so you get more of an apparent increase in volume, so it's kind of the sum of all the things.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
