Digitech GSP 1101 At Summer NAMM 2007 Part Two
The biggest worry most guitarists have when running their guitar through an effects preamp is: What happens to my tone?
While on the floor at Summer NAMM 2007, Digitech showed the Gearwire crew that those worries are now a thing of the past. With the Digitech GSP 1101, the guitarist adds effects to the existing tone.
The small rack mount unit was designed specifically for the purpose of preserving the tone of costly guitars and amps. The professional or amateur guitarist can hang on to the nuances he loves, while enjoying the perks of digital enhancement.
DOUG MARHOFFER: So the other thing that's cool about this thing is that it has two of our Audio DNA2 chips in it. What that allows you to do is going from preset to preset, there's no more that lag load time which normally you'd have with effects processors if you change a preset, so if you're going from a verse to a chorus and you need that downbeat on the chorus to be that sound, you get that now.
The last thing I'll talk to you about is what allows us to get the tone and preserve your tone. Inside all processors, there's things called voltage rails, and voltage rails have to do with your signal path, and normally let's say the voltage rail is +12 to -12. If you ran a guitar into an oscilloscope, your guitar almost covers that full range. Now, even if the signal is just passing through an effects processor, normal voltage rails can't allow -- they just can't read the full bandwidth so what it does is it clips the signal. It just, it's almost like a built-gate so that's why people say when I run through an effects process, it affects my tone. Well yeah because the rails can't read the full signal path so what it does is it clips it down, so even though the signal is just passing through, it is affecting your tone. The rails on here, we've now solved that problem.
We now pass full 12-volt plus/minus so it's not affecting your tone. So it's -- even though it's not a hardwire bypass, the fact that we're doing full-rail pass, it's unnecessary now because now it's virtually like you're going through this unit to the front of your amp so it's not affecting your tone.
So that's what we're really exciting about this piece. It's that you can utilize your rig that you're comfortable with. We're not asking you to say hey, you know, but it's a great thing to have in your toolbox now and it's very versatile.
It just started shipping. The street price on it in the U.S. is $499. By January, we will have a foot controller for it that'll plug in here so full, robust, street, very road-rugged switching, treadle for the volume and the delays and stuff like that. That'll be out in January. It also has a USB out. What that'll allow you to do is we're going to have software control for it. All of our pedals we have the ability to soft too so you can go in and edit them visually, which is really cool for this thing now is that you'll be able to plug it in and you'll be able to see all the routing and you'll be able to see the models and you'll be able to build your amp models out. Very easy to use. The other thing that the USB will allow you to do is plug in to our sound community on Digitech.Com where we have hundreds and thousands of users on there sharing presets. So if some guy says, "Hey, I got this killer David Gilmour preset," you just go into the web and download it and "Boom!" you got it now on your unit. o this is now shipping, the GSP 1101 by Digitech and we're pretty excited about it. Go to your store and give it a listen. Tell me what you think.
