JASON DONNELLY: Hello. This is Jason Donnelly a.k.a. DJ Puzzle for Gearwire.Com. The following demonstration will show you how to produce an eight-bar loop from a simple MIDI file. The tools I'm going to use are as follows: Cubase 4 for sending MIDI data, an Access Virus for the sound source, Sony's Vegas 6 for recording and editing, Sony Sound Forge 8 for mastering, and a simple MIDI file. Let's begin with step 1: recording the performance.

This is the control surface of the Access Virus TI. I'm going to choose my patch or program if you will by selecting using the value up and down or plus and minus on the Access Virus. The current patch I have now is TIJ Bell SV #5. That's not quite the sound that I was looking for. Let's find something a little more [JASON DONNELLY AUDITIONING SOUNDS ON THE ACCESS VIRUS TI] -- a little more trancey [JASON DONNELLY AUDITIONING SOUNDS ON THE ACCESS VIRUS TI]. Wow. I don't think it gets any trancier than that.

Okay, so we have our patch. Next thing I want to do is load the MIDI file in Cubase. Now that we have our patch selected on the sound source, we're going to move on to Cubase. I'm going to select MIDI file from within Cubase from my arsenal of MIDI files and trigger that sound source, so let's move to the Apple and load Cubase right there, and this Cubase project contains my arsenal of MIDI loops and MIDI files that I tend to scroll through when I'm searching for some inspiration. There are MIDI files that I've created throughout the years that I have collected. It looks like we already have it soloed, so here is the MIDI file that we're going to use right here. It's soloed. We have our loop playback mode selected, which is down in transport. Here are the actual events in the event editor. I'll zoom in and show you that as I play it back for you, and let's hit play and give it a listen.

Okay, I'm going to open it in the editor, the event editor, and I'm going to zoom in so you can see what these MIDI notes look like in this editor, and let's start it from the beginning and let's play it back and see how it sounds.

Looping back.

Okay. It sounds good, nice and trancey, nice and big. The next thing I'm going to do is open Vegas on my Windows PC and I'm going to record the performance.

My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
