Doc Electro Amps Have At Least One Thing In Common With Medieval Fortresses

Doc Electro (who refers to himself both in the third person and as the royal "we") guarantees his amps for life. . . that's complete coverage on everything from pots and inputs to the tubes. How can he confidently offer such comprehensive coverage? He's clinically insane!

Also, he builds the amps by hand using ultra-rugged turret board -- none of this flimsy phenolic cotton paper PCB for Doc Electro, no sir.

DOC ELECTRO: Hey! I'm Doc Electro for Doc Electro Amplification in Jeffersonville, Indiana. I am a warranty station for 70 brands of professional music everything from Allen & Heath to Yamaha.

About 5 or 10 years ago, I decided to start building my own amplifiers. They're all point-to-point hand wiring with turreted boards. It's MIL-SPEC boards, and I can show you those if you like.

PATRICK OGLE: Yup. [INDISCERNIBLE]

DOC ELECTRO: Let's see it. Now that's a turreted board. This is a large piece of phenolic, fireproof, with turrets that are on the board and they're clamped on like a rivet, and so there's a mechanical wrap around the turret and then an electrical connection, which is the solder. So, you can drop these things and wreck it too perhaps but you won't break loose any connections, and that's the whole story about building something to last.

PATRICK OGLE: Mmm hmm. And that's the same sort of anything you'd use in pretty much any of the amps that [OVERLAPPING]?

DOC ELECTRO: That's correct. They're all made the same way. It's a lifetime guarantee. If anything fails, and that's including tubes, unless you break one. Well, you know [OVERLAPPING].

PATRICK OGLE: [OVERLAPPING] [LAUGHING]

DOC ELECTRO: And also it's found that folks, as they get better, they'll tend to change their instrument or change their play style or sometimes even change the type of music they play. These are amps are set up with the customer and his instrument and his cab if it's head. If not, then my cab because that's what he's buying, but the customer plays with a certain style and tone, and when we establish the baseline of the tone, all of the controls are centered so he has the maximum range for bass and treble and mid range from low to high, just right in the middle. Now, if he changes his instrument o changes his play style, he can bring the amp back and I will redesign the tone stacks to change a few components to get him back where he was with that new instrument and that new play style, and there we are.
