Doepfer A-100 Modular Patchbay: The Land Of Analog Make-Believe
In a time when digital VST plug-ins seem to be flooding the market, and every other electro release seems to have some hi-end "doot doot doop doot" digitally distorted sound; it's interesting to see artists going back to analog modular synthesis. My early encounters with this type of synthesis probably came from watching PBS in the eighties, when electronic music seemed to score everything public access could get it's hands on in those days.
Something about those sounds, though, was unmistakable. They were so fat and rich, and they existed within a definite space of their own. Recently, I've checked out Robert Rich's MOTM setup, and the other night I got to check out Surachai's A-100 Analog Modular System at Sonoteque.
The A-100 benefits from being less bulky than the moog patchbays of the early seventies. This, of course, also indicates that it costs significantly less money than the behemoths championed by bands like Tangerine Dream and Goblin. Added to this is the ability Doepfer gives the musician to switch out modules and customize his setup.
One difficultly with a modular setup is that you have to be somewhat of an engineer. Modular kits work in the same way that Native Instruments Reaktor does, except without the presets. Every sound has to be carefully thought out, and sometimes imagination has to be supplemented with analytical thought. The results, however, can be priceless.
The final, and perhaps most beneficial aspect of the A-100 is its ability to directly interface with midi. With this in mind, you can sync the modular system using Logic, Sonar, Ableton Live, Cubase, or pretty much anything that uses midi as a controller. You could even use circuit bent controllers to create a really bizarre mingling of sound. Again, the advantage to a modular system is not ease of use, but the ability to create original, high-fidelity sounds that are completely your own.

That's a really funny sound
That's a really funny sound that quite resembles the one when we work on with "doot doot doop doot" in a digital studio. I have did all the work on my studio following the Robert Rich's MOTM setup. I have no much idea about the Modular setup, I have never tried it. I would like to give a try for A100, very soon.

love the beat sound
yeah.. I love the beat sound..
Apart from the amazing but
Apart from the amazing but unaffordable Buchla 200e, the A-100 is the #1 choice for people looking for a true modular system. However, you need to be well grounded in music synthesis in order to do something useful with it, else you will end up with a very powerful drone and f/x machine.
The Doepfer A100 sounds
The Doepfer A100 sounds really cool, is really flexible. You can make standard subtractive sounds, additive sounds,fm sounds and so on. There are many different modules available ,so it is possible to really adapt it to your needs.
