Dunlop Fuzz Face: Putting Fuzz Pedal To The Fuzz Metal
Owen O'Malley and his standard issue Gearwire demonstrator beard gear up to demo the Dunlop Fuzz Face. This unit is basically a fuzz survivalist essential, and it's been supplying that deliciously psychedelic fuzz buzz since the 60s increased demand for fuzz pedal alongside an increased demand in other, as of yet uncorrelated products that grew in popularity around that time period.
OWEN O'MALLEY: Hi. Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'm Owen O'Malley, and this is the Fuzz Face.
The Fuzz Face was originally made by a company called Dallas Arbiter in 1966, and the core of its design, of its fuzzy sound was its germanium transistors. Now, they have since switched over to silicon transistors. Many people say that this harshens the sound although Jimi Hendrix did actually use some silicon-based Fuzz Faces on some of his later recordings. The Fuzz Faces are now made by the Jim Dunlop company which makes MXR pedals and Crybabys and lots of other pedals too, and this is their most recent version of the Fuzz Face. Let's plug it in.
The first thing that you do when you get your new Fuzz Face is that you got to put a battery in it because it does not come with one. Also, you cannot run this thing by 9-volt power. I've already unscrewed this basically so let's take the single scre off and here's the back plate and the innards here. Pretty empty-looking casing here. Where does the -- Here's the battery compartment. Okay. I guess that'll rest there. Okay, and now we got to find the thread here somehow. Where is it? You know what, cut.

Hey, here we go. All right. Okay, now that we've got our battery in and our Fuzz Face connected, we're running into a Deluxe Reverb, a reissue of the Deluxe Reverb. Here's our clean tone.

So it's a very bassy effect. It's a pretty vintagey sounding effect.

I've been on the bridge pickup this entire time. Let's just switch over to the neck to hear how it sounds.

So definitely not a modern-sounding effect by any means. A pretty legitimate heir to the Fuzz Face throne I'd say. That was the Jim Dunlop Fuzz Face. You've been watching Gearwire.Com.
