EAW SMS Series Makes Like Ronnie Woods And Adds Even More Models To Its Roster
EAW has expanded their line of SMS utility speakers with a six-pack of new models:
- SMS1990 - 2 x 3-inch LF, 1 x 1.3-inch HF
- SMS2124 - 4 x 3-inch LF, 2 x 2-inch HF
- SMS2990 - 4 x 3-inch LF, 1 x 1.3-inch HF
- SMS4124 - 4 x 4-inch LF, 3 x 2-inch HF
- SMS4940 - 4 x 4-inch LF, 3 x 2-inch HF
- SMS4990 - 4 x 4-inch LF, 1 x 1.3-inch HF
The SMS Series incorporates something EAW calls "Theta (Θ) Technology," which we're assuming is described in detail in L. R. Hubbard's Dianetics. Theta Technology basically refers to a design concept that aids in bass-reproduction. According to EAW, the design "utilizes tuned driver spacing to create low-frequency (LF) pattern control by placing pairs of smaller woofers symmetrically around the high-frequency (HF) subsystem. The spaced woofers maintain pattern control into the LF range to complement the wide-by-narrow coverage delivered by the specially designed HF subsystems. The result is wide, well-controlled horizontal patterns, meaning fewer loudspeakers are needed per project."
The enclosures themselves were designed with retail and institutional installation in mind: the design cuts down on disruptive reflections from the wall or ceiling they are mounted to.
Different dispersion coverages are available depending on the particular space's needs. SMS2124 and SMS4124 models feature a 120º x 40º coverage pattern. The SMS4940 features a 90º x 40º coverage pattern. The SMS1990, SMS2990 and SMS4990 models feature a 90º x 90º coverage pattern.
The SMS Series also incorporates EAW's proprietary "Clip-Fit," which won't offer any help in calming enraged shopaholics, but does make installation easier by integrating the mounting and audio connections into the same, conductive insert.
The new EAW SMS models are available now.
