MusikMesse Video: Edirol M16-DX Mixer

April 11, 2007

Edirol's Julian Tritsch speaks with Gearwire's Joe Wallace about the company's M16-DX mixer, a new digital mixer entry for Edirol featuring an innovative two-box design (one mixing device, one breakout box) that seeks to restore the tactile control of analog mixers to the digital mixing experience. In this video tour we get a long look at the features from the floor of MusikMesse 2007 in Frankfurt.

JOE WALLACE: I'm Joe Wallace for Gearwire.Com. I'm at the Edirol booth with Julian Tritsch. We're talking about the Edirol M16-DX. Tell me a little bit about this unit.

JULIAN TRITSCH: Well certainly. I'm very, very excited about this. This is a really new thing for us. We've introduced a new range of mixer, we've got three, and that's the top-of-the-line range. This is really exciting because normally when we talk about digital mixers, people get really, really frustrated because they think well, you got to be going into submenus to do something and you lose all the really nice things about an analog mixer. Well, it's hands-on control, and if you want to change an EQ, you can do it right away really quickly. Digital mixers are normally very, very difficult. Well, this is different. The M16-DX is a 16-channel fully digital mixer which comes with two different boxes, so we have mixer controlling unit and a breakout box which basically enables you to plug all sorts of things into it. The breakout box actually gives you four mic preamps, high-quality mic preamps with phantom power, a couple of Hi-Z inputs so if you want to plug guitar or bass direct into it that's all right. Also, you have all sorts of jack balanced connections at the back so effectively, because we have a USB 2 connection, you'll be able to record 16 separate inputs directly into your DAW software, so very, very cool stuff.

Now the mixer, if we actually look at it, it looks like a regular analog mixer, and that's the nice thing about this. Now, I'll show you here, what you can do is that anything you do on the mixer you don't have to go into a menu. All you need to do is do what you want to do and basically the actually firmware will update itself automatically and the display will ust show you what you're doing in realtime as well so it's a very, very convenient thing to have. The mixer actually has some built-in effects as well, so if you're recording a microphone, you can put a compressor or limiter on. You also have a send so you can have the same reverb for all your channels, and finally we've got a finalizer as well, so if you're playing live and you want to have a bit more gain, you know, to get that sound for the stage, just switch it on [INDISCERNIBLE] get the level output.

Another little neat trick on the two digital mixers that we have is a very new feature called room acoustic control, and that is really exciting. Basically, if you press this button for a second, the mixer will send a pink signal in the left and the right speaker and then will capture it back with the in-built microphone within the unit. Now, it will do that, analyze the response, and actually EQ the room for you, which is really, really nice. So, if you're not really -- you don't have the money to have a really expensive room which is soundproof, you know, obviously perfect, then just use that and it will compensate for you. If you're playing live, you're going to a gig and then another venue, boom. One second -- it takes five seconds to do that and you get the best sound automatically playing so we're really, really looking forward to starting shipping this month.

JOE WALLACE: Great. I'm Joe Wallace at the Edirol booth at Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Germany for Gearwire.Com.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
