Edirol R-09HR: I Guess The Demand For People Recording Fields Is Something I'll Never Understand
The competition in the field recording market grows ever the more fierce, and Edirol adds fire to the flames with the debut of the R-09HR at Musikmesse. The R-09HR is a high-def recorder that boasts 24-bit/96kHz audio fidelity.
The newly developed I.A.R.C. [Isolated Adaptive Recording Circuit] is an analog circuit that works tightly with the unit's built-in A/D converter. Electrolytic capacitors not only sound impressive but also provide reliable power and independently powered analog circuitry to eliminate DC interference.
The built-in electet stereo microphone is complete with a dedicated analog input control, mono / stereo selector, low-cut filter, limiter / Auto Gain Control and gain boost. The microphone housing is kept separate from the main circuit board to further prevent noise interference.
All field recorders are portable, but not all have been designed with an easy-to-grip tactile feel. The 1.5" OLED screen makes things easy to see. Couple that with a preview speaker on the back panel, and you can monitor with or without headphones to make hearing just as easy.
An included wireless remote controller allows transport functions like recording start / playback start, fast forward, rewind, volume control and input level control can be accessed from a distance. This is a brilliant feature so you don't have to hit record and run when recording audio that you have to control from a remote location . . . or if you watched too many episodes of MythBusters and carelessly avoided any disclaimers.

Max dB?
I wonder if I could record my rehearsals with this cool recorder. The thing is: we play heavy-metal and we play it loud, and condenser mics are too sensible.
Edirol/Roland should rate max dB for this unit.

As a field producer I've recorded very loud shows with the previous generation of this model, with no problems.
The mic sensitivity can be adjusted to 1/30 of its default levels at the "high" setting. There's also a "low" setting, which I mostly used with an output cord from the mixing board, but if the show is too loud then that can also be done with the built-in mic.
