Fender '78 Precision Bass And Fender Bullet: Edison Glass Has Leo To Thank For Tone

May 28, 2008
Fenders With Edison Glass

New York's Edison Glass made their way to Chicago where Gearwire's Bill Holland caught up with the band to discuss gear. In this video, we first talk to Super Mario-esque bassist "Mountain" about his simple but effective rig which consists of a '78 Fender P-Bass, an Ashdown 900 and only an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff to contort the signal between the guitar and amp.

Guitarist James has a little more equipment involved in shaping their sometimes driving, sometimes dreamy rock sound. James talks about being enamored with vintage Fender Mustangs and being economically reasonable enough to opt for a vintage Fender Bullet.

[EDISON GLASS PERFORMING]

MOUNTAIN: Hey. We're Edison Glass on Gearwire.Com. I'm Mountain. I play bass and sing.

JAMES: I'm James and I play guitar.

JOSH: I'm Josh and I play guitar and sing.

JOE: And I'm Joe and I play the drums

MOUNTAIN: I have a 1978 Fender P-Bass, repainted to TV Yellow. It's a great bass. It just has like really great tone out of it. The wood is already settle so it's not going anywhere like your new guitars and I just really love the way the pickups sound.

And my head is an Ashdown 900 head that is awesome. I started playing Ashdown because we recorded our record with an Ashdown head, a 300 head, but playing shows and needing some more wattage and more volume, I chose to get the 900 head.

And I use a Big Muff and a tuner, Monster Cables, and it all works out great and I get awesome out of that [OVERLAPPING]

[MOUNTAIN PERFORMING ON BASS WITH EDISON GLASS]

JAMES: The main guitar that I use is an '81 Fender Bullet, and I went the bullet because I was actually -- we were in the studio doing this record, I got to use a friend's Mustang guitar. I really liked it and I do not have the money to go buy vintage Mustangs nor would I want to bring one around the country, so I heard about the Bullet. I guess they started making them when they discontinued the Mustang. The Mustang pickups, in this weird kind of Tele-shaped body and I played one, I loved it, I got it fairly cheap for a vintage American-made Fender. So, I like it a lot. I run through tons of pedals. For overdrive and distortion, I have the Menatone Fish Factory. It's like the tube screamer but I think it has a little more of a scope to it. It doesn't feel like all is in it. It' just straight mids. That's one of my favorites. I have a couple of delays, and after trying a lot of stuff I settled on. I used the SIB echo drive plus and the Timeline by Damage Control mostly because I love the tube delays. You get some really good close to analog sounding and stuff that analog won't do. You can get some really awesome drive out of it, and it'll work good with digital settings, so.

I really liked those and my amps that I use right now. One is the Marshall Blues Breaker 212 combo. What I've actually being messing around with lately is I have a little Fender Blrd Junior. It's just a little 15-watt tube amp and I put that through some Avatar speaker cab, a 212 cab, and I actually went with that because the lower wattages I can burn the tubes hotter while not super loud in all the clubs that we play, because we don't really play stadiums, and I'm don't really to get amazing loud so thanks for And actually I just started trying out the Fender's new Jazzmaster. It's a little more road ready. Now, I have an American Standard, one back home, and I can't bring it on the road because the bridge goes crazy, but they put a new bridge on it. Put some more warm pickups in it and it sounds great.
