Roland TR-808 And Vinyl: The Egyptian Lover Throws Down The Gauntlet To Digital DJs

May 30, 2008
The Egyptian Lover And Jamie Jupiter

If Movement 2008 was Wrestlemania and DJs were all wrestlers, The Egyptian Lover and Jamie Jupiter would be the tag team champion based on this interview. The Egyptian Lover lays the smack down on DJs who start with CD players or software like Serato and simply play music.

This may be the greatest promo ever given on Gearwire.

Nothing like a self-hyping DJ to remind myself why I am not doing it. It was certainly a self plugging promo.

Wow.. he has got an 808! Crikey. Thats, erm, old.

While I agree with his sentiments on doing more than just playing music, I don't see what his comments regarding the medium you play off have to do with anything. I learnt to 'beat-match' on vinyl - but how does that prepare you to deal with looping, effects, or the massive amount of things new technology allows you to do now?

Did James Zabiela learn to mix on Vinyl? Would it have made any difference to what he does now? I doubt it.
