Electrix Filter Factory: Tapping And Turning With DJ Puzzle
We clock in for work at the Electrix Filter Factory where various filters must be applied to this loop to keep it as interesting as possible for six minutes. It's really an allegory for our own lives -- trying to entertain ourselves by putting twists on routines, but alas, I digress.
Jason Donnelly aka DJ Puzzle gets excited about big knobs and the very likely possibility of turning them to filter his loop and reshape some waveforms.
JASON DONNELLY: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. This is Jason Donnelly and of course we have the Electrix Filter Factory high-order analog filter whci is no longer in production but a really great piece. I'm sure you can find one on eBay for 100 buck or Craigslist.
On the front here we have Buzz. This section is sort of a distortion. We got Buzz, amount, and trim amount, and that kind of warms it up or can also add a distortion to the sound source. There's stereo filter, we got our frequency knobs, big giant knob here, really cool. Quality made piece of gear here. It's nice and heavy. The knobs are made of metal. We have low pass, high pass, band pass, notch, resonance, four-pole, mono switch, single shot or waveform. We can also tap tempo right here or sync to an external MIDI source. There's also another way to use division to adjust the timing of the LFO or this speed knob here as you can see, and there's your outlet for depth and your wet/dry mix. So let's have a listen.

So using the Buzz is kind of warps the sound up.

I said it's more of a distortion it's adding but I think it might clip here without using a compressor so I'm not feeling good on that [INDISCERNIBLE]. You can hear, this is without buzz. This is with buzz.
SO our filter, we got these momentary buttons here. These are where you trigger the effect on the fly just for that moment. Pressing the engage button, it stays on or off. You can hold these down, you can tap them, you can shape your desired effect.
So, I'm just going to show you what the filter sounds like.

This is on low pass.

Here we have our tap tempo and we switch from single shot to LFO mode, we pick up our depth here...,

...and you can hear the LFO and I have it to random waveform selection so it's choosing a waveform randomly. You can hear that switching and I can go envelope follow or I can go waveform.

You can also change the speed...

...with this knob, the speed knob, and then I can divide that 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1. 6:1, 1:2, then 1:4.
