Electro-Harmonix 2880 Has Us Feeling Loopy

September 30, 2006
Electro-Harmonix 2880
The Electro-Harmonix 2880 Super Multitrack Looper is, for all intents and purposes, a foot-controllable multitrack recording unit. Like other loopers on the market, the 2880 is extremely useful for live situations where musicians are in short supply. (Take heed, backup guitarsts, you can be replaced by a machine.) But the 2880 also records at CD-quality resolution and can store 480 seconds of audio per each of its six tracks (that's four main recording tracks, plus two additional tracks for bouncing). You can expand the recording time significantly by purchasing a larger memory card. To really get the most out of the 2880, you'll also need to purchase the optional 2880 Looper Foot Controller, which allows you to start and stop recording, select tracks, reverse playback, and more, all on the fly.

ELECTRO-HARMONIX REPRESENTATIVE: Okay. So continuing with the demonstration, I will now demonstrate this beautiful gem right here which is the Electro-Harmonix 2880 Looper. This is a stereo digital multi-track looper and I would begin by selecting a new loop and I will get a four count. I have quantize on, and it'll give me a count before I start doing a loop. One, two, three, four.

There you go. So we finished up to the last bar, and automatically it goes to track number two, overdubbing.

And now I'm going to go stereo. Probably with another microphone you capture the stereo environment, and at any moment in time I can pan the tracks. I can continue to overdub. This is the third track. I think I want to create a bass line. Okay, we aren't punched yet. Okay, I've got that [SOUNDS LIKE] pretty soft when I punched in. I'm going to punch in. Here we go.

There you go. Okay let's say I have three tracks that I mixed together, and I want to do a bounce, I want to do a mixdown. So I start the mixdown track, press record and bounce tracks one, two, three, and four into a stereo mixdown track. There you go. As you can see, all has been mixed and I can free these four tracks and start recording again, or I can do a very cool thing which is a constant tempo mixdown which disengages the synchronization between these four tracks and the mixdown track. Let me show this to you. Yeah.

I cam [INDISCERNIBLE]. The reason why is I can move the speed of these.

I can play with this tempo, but the mixdown tracks' tempo remains constant. So, the moment I disengage [INDISCERNIBLE] from its normal tempo, I'll create flanging. And since it has MIDI in and out and it can set and receive MIDI clock which means I can hook it up with a drum machine or sync it with another [INDISCERNIBLE] MIDI. Okay, so let's see. We have a drum sound. I guess what we can do now is I'm going to [INDISCERNIBLE] this down.

Oh, and if I want a smaller version of the 20 -- of the Metal Muff, I have the Micro Metal Muff and the Pocket Metal Muff. Let's try soloing with that.

That can slowly fade away with confidence. Thanks to the [SOUNDS LIKE] hum people here, and these have been the Four Horsemen of Rock & Roll. It has been a pleasure to demo for you.
