A lot of people will try to tell you a lot of things about the way you place your guitar pedals in your effects chain, and there really is no right answer. Of course, Matt Sekel didn't earn his "experimental" descriptor by following the most orthodox approach, and we follow his signal path through his chain.
The first pedal in his chain is the Electro-Harmonix Micro Q-Tron, an envelope filter pedal. While it's none too unconventional to put a filter effect early on or first in the chain, nowadays, it's a good place to start, and the Micro Q-Tron is definitely an interesting effect to check out.
