Empirical Labs Distressor demo video

Empirical Labs Distressor
Who better to demonstrate the EL8 Distressor than the guy who invented it, Dave Derr of Empirical Labs? The Distressor is a digitally-controlled compressor with an analog signal path that leans toward musicality rather than trasparency. The 1-U rack device boasts a dynamic range of 110 dB and a signal-to-noise ratio of 100-plus dB. Oh, and there's a "nuke" button.
Take a gander at the Empirical Labs page.

i am not sure why you wouldnt plug into some jack they have so we can hear the real sound of it instead of through your handicam audio? this is after all an AUDIO website. LET ME HEAR IT

old video

well...

a. it's at a tradeshow, so they most likely were using a condenser mic or the portable wireless mic. We don't have a handycam.

b. This was shot in 2006 vs. now which is 2008, unless you wrote this in 2006, and it's just catching up to us now.

c. If you've ever been to a trade show like NAMM, you know that it's the equivalent of trying to get good audio at a circus. A lot of times the vendors are not set up with an easy way to get good audio. We do our best, but NAMM and AES are usually pretty insane. In fact, none of our current production staff were at this show, so I'm not sure how it was recorded.

let me hear it to me, too

bad excuses

boring...

do your demos in the right place, in studio

this is a expensive piece of gear, do it seriously
or stay at home

yea, do it right!!

Do it in a studio for your website! NOT on a Handy-Kam!!

DAVE DERR: The next product down is our Distressor, our first product, and this product we just sold 10,000 pieces of. We hit the serial number 10,000 about two months ago, we actually had a party last night which I'm still recovering from, and this product is a compressor. It's basically a modern, digitally controlled analog compressor and we basically allow you to emulate many of the old classic units as well as get a few new sounds.

We use digital controlled analog, excuse me, because it allows us to get a lot in a very small space. The ratio is changed with the knob but with the stepped control. We do that for a number of reasons, one of which is we actually click in and out different circuits when we switch the ratio. We also have some detector side-chain EQ built in, another unusual feature. Again, by using a digitally controlled interface, we can make it quite easily fittable on this front panel.

We have your standard controls, your input, your attack, decay, and your output, all very standard compressors controls, and we give you a very wide range of control over those parameters. You'll probably be able to hear this a little bit so let me just give you a quick demonstration of massive amounts of compression on a drum kit.

[DAVE DERR DEMONSTRATING EMPIRICAL LABS DISTRESSOR USE ON DRUM TRACKS]

I'm only just using this top Distressor here. It's one microphone, a Neumann microphone, in a very small room. I'm going to turn off all the extensive modes. I'll just choose the basic compressor. I'm going to go to nuke. Again, that's the highest of all ratios, and I'm going to start with a small amount. This is about 10 dB of compression, and you can see it's pretty cranked but it doesn't change the sound much yet. I'm going to add some more.

It's very easy to setup. Basically, you control the input gain, and that controls the threshold. Now I'm going to A/B it. This is with compression, this is without, and believe it or not the peak levels are the same. The peak level is actually the same but you can tell that the sound sounds much more present an live once nuke is engaged. So that's our Distressor.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
