Ableton Live, Novation Remote SL, And Kore: In The Studio With Emulsion
Producer and gearhead Emulsion invited us into his home studio this week, and gave us a tour of his production setup. This brief overview gives an introduction to later interviews covering specific gear in his studio. It also serves as a great way to see what you need to set up a basic electronic music studio. Specifically, we will be looking at the Focusrite Liquid Mix, Native Instruments Kore, Novation Remote SL, Ableton Live, and Vanguard VST Plugin.
Tune in after this video for more equipment specific interviews with Emulsion.
BILL HOLLAND: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'm Bill Holland and I'm here with Emulsion.
EMULSION: Hi.
BILL HOLLAND: How are you doing?
EMULSION: Good. Good. Got my studio setup here all powered on and everything. I'm going to show the overview of just the ins and outs of software. So, I'll start with the overall setup. I'm running a G5 with two monitors, one for live and one for softsynths. I've got a pair of Mackie HR824's for monitoring, MOTU 828 Mark II is for all the audio in and out and any MIDI in and out, which I'm not doing much of these days. Mostly I'm just sampling records or VHS or something like that for any of my inputs. My sequencing and audio is primarily done now in Ableton Live. Sometimes I do come up with ideas in Reason but primarily I'm working in Ableton with a lot of the Native Instruments stuff. I got some patches up here. I work with the Remote SL as a controller which lets me kind of have an actual hands on changing the mix and having it reflected on the keyboard. It's good to kind of get away from the screen a little bit with this stuff, and the other boxes that you see here, I do some drum programming on the Trigger Finger, and I use the Liquid Mix a lot for adding a little bit more texture and some kind of real analog-sounding compression to the mix.
BILL HOLLAND: All right, Nate, and thanks a lot. We'll be back with another segment of the actual ins and outs of how you have everything set up here. I'm Bill Holland for Gearwire.Com.
