Focusrite Liquid Mix: In The Studio With Emulsion
In this last segment from Emulsion's Studio, we take a look at the Focusrite Liquid Mix. As readers of our site may already know, the Liquid Mix is an external compression and EQ interface that works directly with any DAW you may be using. In this video, Nathan shows off it's capabilities within Ableton Live.
Keep looking to Gearwire soon for more "in the studio" features.
BILL HOLLAND: Hi everybody. I'm Bill Holland with Gearwire.Com here with Emulsion, and we're going to talk about the Focusrite Liquid, I believe.
EMULSION: Liquid Mix.
BILL HOLLAND: Liquid Mix.
EMULSION: Right, and Liquid Mix is one little box with 32 channels of compression and EQ all on not modelled but convoluted and it's a controller and DSP in one so you just -- you get that and suddenly your old computer is still perfectly fine for doing a mix. It's great, great box for the price.
All right. So, I will show off some of the nice features in Liquid Mix. I use it in a mix all over -- virtually all my tracks. It's great on bass, drums, a lot of kind of gooey bass-heavy synth tracks. They all benefit a lot from getting cleaned up by the Liquid Mix.
So I will show it off here. I've got a drum track that I can play, and what I do, I can bring up the Liquid Mix and I'll bring it up here and I can show off I can pick various models of EQs, you know, I'm a fan of the '70s era stuff a lot of times, and throw that on and then it's impressive, the results you can get. It's great for kind of cleaning up low mids but also for adding some nice kind of crisp high highs, and one thing I love about it is that it's really musical because it's based on all their EQs where everything's already sort in stone. You only have one knob to choose your highs, changing your highs or lows. That kind of stuff simplifies the mixing process. I really enjoy it.
I'll also show off a modeled compressor here. It's nice because they all start at kind of default values so you can see the nice, round -- Just very quickly, you can get some really good, crunchy distorted stuff out of it. You start bringing the gain up, just really good sound quality. I use it a lot on drum tracks for kind of cleaning up and tightening up kicks. Definitely enjoyable.
So all in all, it's a great piece of gear and terrific for taking the load off of your computer and just giving you a nice different flavor than you would get out of your sequencer's EQs.
BILL HOLLAND: All right, Nate. Thanks a lot. I appreciate that, and we'll be back to hear more from Emulsion in Chicago. I'm Bill Holland for Gearwire.Com.
