Epiphone Tom DeLonge Signature ES333: Examining All The Small Things That Make This Ax Unique
What's it's name again? Oh yeah, it's the Epiphone Tom DeLonge Signature ES333! You probably know Tom as the bassist from Boxcar Racer, which may have you wondering why he's got a signature guitar. If you can figure it out, let us know.
The opening riff of this video is sure to be so familiar as to make you want to underage drink, but can you identify the outro riff? Here's a hint: they have easily the best name of any anarcho-socialist militant-vegan pop-punk band from the 90s.

OWEN O'MALLEY: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'm Owen O'Malley, and as you probably guessed, I am playing the Tom DeLonge Signature Epiphone a.k.a. the ES333. This guitar is based on the custom Gibson that was made for Tom DeLonge. It's made by Epiphone so it's licensed by Gibson.
It is made in China, but it has an actual U.S. made Gibson Dirty Fingers humbucker, which is the only pickup on this guitar. It's a pretty excellent, pretty cool-sounding humbucker. It is dirty. It's got a single volume control, pretty simple control layout. The body is maple back and sides and a birch top. It's got this cool custom finish. The neck is a 21-fret rosewood fingerboard. It's got a mahogany neck, and it is signed by Mr. DeLonge which is French for "of Longe".
So, let's play this guitar on a slightly cleaner sounding channel. It's not really made to do anything except play punk rock but you kind of get a sense of the range of this pickup. All right, let's see here.

Not a very chimey sounding clean tone. It's not like a fat jazzy tone at all. It's kind of cool. It's cool for doing some simple like alternative-sounding crunchy rhythms, but like I said this guitar is made to do basically one thing.

Most people know Tom Delonge as the founder of Blink-182. Boxcar Racer was a little side project of his. You guys should do some more research before writing your articles.
oh man....
that was quite obviously a joke. did you not catch the other references to blink songs in the copy? did you not notice me playing the riff from "dammit" in the opening of the video? do you really take yourself that seriously?!?!?!? lighten up!
well...
I think taking blink 182 seriously is a pretty big misstep in the first place (and by that I mean that their music was always pretty tongue in cheek and humorous, not that they are bad musicians). I'm sure they would appreciate the joke...I mean it's obvious he was in blink, because I've never heard of tom's other projects until now. Then again, I haven't listened to pop-punk since I left high school.
Oh sorry, I honestly didn't
Oh sorry, I honestly didn't notice that you were joking. I thought maybe Boxcar Racer was more popular in Chicago that Blink-182.
Tom Delonge originally
Tom Delonge originally played guitar in Blink-182 and in his side-project, Boxcar Racer. After Blink broke up, He started Angels and Airwaves which he currently plays guitar for as well.
Tom did not play bass in any of his bands
Knowledge is power guys. Knowledge is power.

Actually Tom played bass early on in Boxcar Racer there.

I thought they played the guitar parts in Blink-182 using the Casio electric guitar preset.

Blink-182
Blink-182 was a very promising band that got caught up
in the business end/radio push where they did not fit
after awhile, probably other issues as well. I really dug that band and I am in my 40's!
I liked his side projects and Angels' and the AirWaves
as well
I think his first signature guitar was a Gibson
not demoted to Epiphone but more $$ friendly
still has the Gibson Dirty Fingers P/U
I know he had a signature
I know he had a signature Fender for a while. It came in some kind of surf green color.
