Cook County Ramblers bassist Josh Hines' original reason for picking up the Ernie Ball MusicMan StingRay was simple enough -- Flea played one, and Flea probably wouldn't have if the bass sucked. Of course, Josh Hines' style has changed away from slap bass with the Cook County Ramblers, but the versatility of the StingRay hasn't.

Check out this video as Josh explains how he uses his rig to carve out deep, round notes.

JASON DONNELLY: Jason Donnelly here with Gearwire.Com, and we’re at Martyr's in Chicago on Lincoln Avenue, and I'm here to see a band's -- A friend's actually in this band. I'm here to see their band play.

This is Josh. Josh, will you be singing tonight or...?

JOSH: I'm going to be singing and playing some bass guitar.

JASON DONNELLY: So tell us a little bit about why did you chose the Ernie Ball, if you don't mind me asking?

JOSH: Um, actually it was -- I believe it was Flea who played it, and I thought his sound was great. Like in the earlier band, I used to like hop and, you know, like, you know, and play the bass like that, but in this one it's more mellow but it still has -- it just has a universal sound. It's a classic. The band before has it, you know. You see videos of bands from all over, you know, and the bass player is playing an Ernie Ball, you know. It's a classic instrument.

JASON DONNELLY: And what are we looking at here for an amp?

JOSH: I went with a David Eden cabinet. It's a 1 x 15. I like the round sound of the 1 x 15. Some guys like the pluckiness of like the 4 x 10 but I like the round, deep notes. And then the Trace Elliot head. I love it. I mean half the reason I got it, honestly, I know it's cheesy but I love the black light.

JASON DONNELLY: Oh man, those lights are badass.

JOSH: And it was in my price range, so, and at the time I bought it, it was used, and so I was like Oh, I'll just get this for now and I'll replace it later with something, you know, like super cool, but this thing rocks and I kept it.

You've seen these cords before?

JASON DONNELLY: No. What's up with these cords?

JOSH: I found them in this little guitar store out in the burbs like Burr Ridge.

JASON DONNELLY: Oh yeah. Well, oh okay.

JOSH: I think they're Peavey but I like them because it's like all solid. There's no like twisting. It never comes like unscrewed, You know what I mean?

JASON DONNELLY: What's the name of it? What's the brand name on these?

JOSH: I think they're Peaveys. I think they're made...

JASON DONNELLY: Peavey cables, huh. Are they pretty good?

JOSH: ...by Peavey. I like them.

JASON DONNELLY: Wow. Peavey cables ladies and gentlemen.

JOSH: I could be wrong obviously.
