Fairlight CMI 30A: When Pioneers Re-emerge, What Does The Future Hold For Music Technology?
The history of the sound and music synthesis cannot be complete without the mention of the Fairlight CMI. The first digital sampling instrument of its kind (I mean come on, who can forget the Mellotron as the first sampling keyboard, right?) the Fairlight CMI has achieved cult status as it has been used by some of the biggest artists during its heyday such as Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, and Peter Gabriel. After two decades and a half since its inception, 2009 will probably see the reintroduction of this legendary instrument in the form of the Fairlight CMI 30th anniversary edition.
In today's world of virtual instruments and computer music, one can certainly pose a question about what would be the relevance of the Fairlight CMI in this new age of virtual instruments and other hardware equipment that integrates today's computers with keyboards. For one thing, Fairlight has been among the older players, if not the oldest, in digital music, particularly sampling. Having those years of experience that led to the CMI's development, plus the influence that it brought to today's sampling instruments signifies their absolute knowledge in this field. That in itself showcases Fairlight's credentials.
Going beyond their credentials is their product. The Fairlight CMI was one of the most powerful synthesizers of its age, being the first one to exhibit sampling and looping capabilities as well as the sound synthesis via hand-drawn waveforms. By itself, it was a complete music making system', the prototype from which today's music workstations have been based upon. Except for a pre-production mockup photo, official word about this the new Fairlight CMI 30A is yet to be heard from Peter Vogel and the rest of the people from Fairlight. Judging by the photo, it seems to be playing off the vintage/retro trend these days but who knows; it's possible that we may be seeing the most powerful music workstation about to emerge in our generation.
