Fender 2006 Jazzmaster And Ian Worang Of Bishop Morocco
Ian Worang plays guitar for Toronto duo, Bishop Morocco (although they seem to have more than two members). Worang is the most talkative of the bunch and he chatted with Gearwire about his 2006 Fender Jazzmaster.
But why the Jazzmaster over other Fenders?
"I prefer single coil pickups, but tend to find most Strats and Teles too bright. The Jazzmaster can still be jangly and biting, but it’s a bit darker sounding," says Worang. "Also, I use the trem a lot, and other than a Bigsby, I don’t think you can find much better than the one on a Jazzmaster."
Worang thinks the guitar is versatile enough to be played through a variety of amps.
"I think it sounds great through all kinds of amps. The sound most people probably associate it with is through a Fender amp, but then you look at J Mascis and he’s putting it through a few Marshall stacks to great effect." he says.
Worang uses a variety of effects and says the Jazzmaster seems to take to some more than others.
"It’s definitely a bit more partial to certain overdrives than to others. Rats work quite well with it as does the Earthquaker Devices White Light that I’m currently using (which reminds me a little of an old Distortion +)," he says. "The best thing I did with this guitar, effects wise, was getting a Diamond Compressor. It’s really enhanced the clean sound and helped its compatibility with fuzz boxes."
He has modified the Jazzmaster a little. Pickups have been swapped and the bridge changed.
"I swapped out the stock pickups with a set made by a guy called Pickup Wizard. He hand winds pickups to vintage specs here in Canada. They’re great sounding and more affordable than Novaks or Lollars," says Worang. "I also put in a Mustang bridge after a couple years of messing with the original, which was always a delicate balancing act of Loctite, electrical tape and allen keys. It’s much more stable now."
There isn't a single thing now that Worang doesn't like about his Jazzmaster.
"There’s a huge range of sounds you can get from it and the tremolo has a great feel," he says. "And of course, it’s a great looking guitar."
