Guitar Walkthrough Videos: Fender American Stratocaster

August 21, 2006
The Fender American Stratocaster is probably the most popular electric guitar design ever produced. Introduced in 1954 as an upgrade over Fender's first production model, the Telecaster (don't tell that to Tele fans), the Stratocaster featured three pickups, a unique internal vibrato system, and a distinctive contoured body shape. The Stratocaster has been used and abused by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Dick Dale, Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Mayer, Robin Trower, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and The Edge.

FENDER REPRESENTATIVE: Thank you for tuning in. We have here an American Standard Stratocaster, chrome red body, a very beautiful guitar. This is another classic guitar. These guitars have been around for a very long time.

It’s a 25.5” scale, it’s an alder body, and it’s kind of a lighter wood. It gives it a very unique tone. A maple neck; it’s a bolt-on neck, flip it around and you can see the classic Fender. Twenty-two medium jumbo frets, maple fretboard. This is actually I really enjoy this fretboard. Very comfortable. Black dot inlays. It’s got a biflex truss rod. If you take a look up at the top, it’s got the Fender Schaller tuners. Again, this is a classic headstock, Fender style. This is a string tree right here. And if you take a look at the back, you got your serial number and your Fender Schaller tuners.

Also, you can get a whammy bar for this guitar, which is a lot of fun, down at the bridge here, and it comes with American Strat single-coil pickups. This is the American two-point synchronized tremolo, which is a lot of fun. I recommend getting one of those as soon as you purchase this guitar. It’s a five-voice selector toggle switch, one volume, two tone knobs. Let’s take a listen. So, this is in your neck position.

Now we’re going to slowly move it on towards the bridge position, one selection at a time.

Again, another different tone. This guitar is capable of producing a lot of different tones.

And then finally the bridge position.

[FENDER REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING THE FENDER AMERICAN STANDARD STRATOCASTER, BRIDGE PICKUP ENGAGED]

This is your classic Fender sound.

If you throw a little distortion on that, just about anything is possible.

[FENDER REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING THE FENDER AMERICAN STANDARD STRATOCASTER, BRIDGE PICKUP ENGAGED WITH DISTORTION]

You can already hear the sound. That’s the classic Fender sound that people have been using...

...and greats have been using for years.

So, that was the bridge pickup. We can go ahead and move back towards the neck pickup here.

Get more of a blues sound.

And here you have the Fender Deluxe molded case that comes with the American Standard Stratocaster. Very soft interior. You got a little packet here with all your little toys and gizmos in there, and it’s a great case to keep your guitar from getting crushed. You can’t put a price on that.
