Fender Deluxe Fretless Jazz Bass - Walkthru Video

April 24, 2007
Fender Deluxe Fretless Jazz
The Fender Deluxe Fretless Jazz Bass is a pretty sweet piece. With a three band active EQ and continuous crossfade between pickups there is a wide array of tones to choose from. Since it comes stocked with flat-wound strings it is ready to do some smooth slidin' right out of the box. I must say I also really like the color scheme on this one. Check out this video to hear the Fender Deluxe Fretless Jazz Bass.

One really COOL bass guitar!

One really COOL bass guitar! Like the crossover pickup functionality. It does simplify bass guitar playing when you want to switch your bass tonality quickly.

That is clearly a gold pickguard, not a "brown" one. Is it me or are your demos becoming more and more lethargic, Dan? Put some welly into it, there's worse things you could be doing with your time!

hahaha now that guy gives the word "gay" some new perspective! :D But I think Dan does a pretty good job! As far as I'm concerned he's one of the best 'hosts' on gearwire, a very relaxed style. Go Dan! :-)

Fuck yeah! I love that guy...a perm is in order Agosto. But really, I'm just glad you're reviewing any guitar that's NOT an Ibanez:P

perms

By: dagosto (not verified)
hahaha, perhaps I will get a perm for halloween this year. That will be my costume. But I kinda love that guy too. I could never do what he does. I just wonder if his attitude is genuine.

In a word - yes. Johnny

By: Mike (not verified)
In a word - yes. Johnny Demarco is a slayer of Dragons, a player of Kings - in short the best gear demo guy ever. He loves what he does. How Refreshing! Don't mess with the DeMarco, he has bigtime love where I'm from. Man-Up, Mister Agosto, there's plenty of us out there with more soul than yourself.

By: dagosto (not verified)
DeMarco in no doubt wields awesomeness. He's getting paid by the company who makes the gear though so he needs to seem excited about whatever he plays. I don't get the comment about soul though. Where did that come from?

By: Ben (not verified)
He reminds me somehow of Bert Smorenburg, who is even more excited but with Bert it goed very well. He is a really nice guys and knows a lot about about music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzxgGt54qRg Oh and Dan, how about a review of the podxt (live)? If figured such a cool piece of gear can't be missing :-)

DAN AGOSTO: Hi. I’m Dan Agosto for Gearwire.Com, and we’re checking out the Fender Deluxe Fretless Jazz Bass. And as you can see, this has a really nice color combination that I like it. This is black with the brown pickguard. Some of the things that makes this a deluxe bass, other than just a regular fretless bass is the EQ controls. It’s a three-band active EQ. This first knob up here is just a volume.

[DAN AGOSTO TWEAKING THE VOLUME KNOB ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS JAZZ BASS]

The second knob over here is actually a crossfader between the two pickups. If I’m over here, I’m just using the neck pickup.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS]

Play that with a pick a little bit...

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, NECK PICKUP]

...and in the middle we’re using both pickups...

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS]

...and over here, just the bridge pickup.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BRIDGE PICKUP]

And let’s play that with fingers really quick.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BRIDGE PICKUP]

All right. I’m going to go back to the center so we’re playing with both these pickups, and we’ll check out our EQ. First of all, this is a stack knob over here. This is our treble. All the way up, this is how it sounds.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS, TREBLE KNOB ALL THE WAY UP]

Not really doing too much with the fingers. We can hear some more noise of course but...

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS, TREBLE KNOB ALL THE WAY UP]

...you can definitely hear it more with the pick. I’m going to turn that treble back down and actually bring it down even further.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS, TREBLE KNOB DOWN]

As you can see, since it’s a fretless bass, I’m not always hitting every note exactly in tune. I’m not really a fretless player but it’s really actually not that hard to switch to a fretless bass of this quality, so that was the sound with the treble all the way down. Let’s turn it back the middle and check out our bass boost. Boost that up there.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS, TREBLE KNOB SET TO MIDDLE, BASS KNOB ALL THE WAY UP]

All right. Bring that back down. I’m going to bring that all the way down.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS, TREBLE KNOB SET TO MIDDLE, BASS KNOB ALL THE WAY DOWNN]

All right, and the we also have a mid frequency boost. I’m going to bring that up.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS, MID FREQUENCY KNOB SET TO HIGHEST]

So that adds a little bit more knock, almost makes it sound a lot more like that Rickenbacker bass that we did in the last video. We’ll bring that down.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS, MID FREQUENCY KNOB SET TO LOWEST]

This gives it a very hollow sound.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING LINES ON THE FENDER DELUXE FRETLESS BASS, BOTH PICKUPS, MID FREQUENCY KNOB SET TO LOWEST]

All right. So, a few other features on this bass that makes it a deluxe bass, we have the bridge over here is chrome bridge and the pickups are actually samarium cobalt. They’re called noiseless jazz pickups. They’re pretty noiseless. They’re very quiet right now. The only time we really heard a good amount of noise was when we turned treble all the way up, and that’s to be expected anyway.

So, that’s the Fender Deluxe Fretless Jazz Bass, and thanks for checking it out here at Gearwire.Com.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
