MR RUSSIA: The Fine Line Between Pushing And Blowing Your Speakers
Ivan Russia is one of two bassists for MR RUSSIA, and in this video he shows us his rig. Ivan speaks highly of his '70s Ampeg 1x15, which can handle the high gain assault that he throws at it. Sustaining the balance between distorting your speaker output and completely blowing your speaker is something Ivan's had to deal with given his overdriven tone. Watch the video to find out how Ivan takes care of it.
PATRICK OGLE: I noticed that there’s a Fender over here.
IVAN RUSSIA: Oh.
PATRICK OGLE: Behind you. Is that yours?
IVAN RUSSIA: This?
PATRICK OGLE: Yeah.
IVAN RUSSIA: On the floor?
PATRICK OGLE: No. I mean the guitar, the bass guitar [OVERLAPPING].
IVAN RUSSIA: Oh yeah. It’s mine. It’s a Jazz Bass with active pickups. It’s got a nice little like preamp down on it. That’s I don't know if it exactly works right but it sounds. And I’ve got this Ampeg combo from the ‘70s which is solid state. This is just 115. It’s got these cool little switches on it that make it brighter, louder, and I’ve never seen another model like that. I’ve also never looked. A friend from another band who also runs distorted bass was like, “I have this amp that I’m selling, and I think it would be great for you,” and I plugged in and it was just great because it actually hits. I’m running into the high gain with the active pickups so I’m hitting this thing pretty hard, and it distorts a little bit. You get a little bit of crunch like from hitting the speaker too hard but it’s not blowing it anymore. I did blow one or -- Temple? -- One? One speaker. One 15. Lesson learned. But I’ve also blown, I have a Carvin back here as a backup. That’s actually Rob’s that I used to use. I blew that one too so probably something I can do with my other bass which is just a Fender P-Bass like my backup. But really it’s about how I play and then the distortion pedals. I got a bass overdrive pedal here. This is pretty much the meat and potatoes of what I use. It stays on the whole time. My tuner and this octave pedal which I run into the guitar input and out the mono output out the direct out, and that gives just as long as I’m playing high, it gives a great, cool, warbly, distorted sound, you know, that’s a lot of fun, but usually it’s just the bass overdrive all the time so that’s such where the distortion comes from, that it’s hitting me up that kind of hard, so.
