Fishman AFX Reverb: Don't Cry Over Spilled Reverb
We were thoroughly impressed by the Fishman AFX Chorus and the Fishman AFX Delay, so it's really no surprise that the AFX Reverb completed a trifecta of tonal triumph. Gearwire's Owen O'Malley takes a moment to show off the reverb settings and controls on the Fishman AFX Reverb as well as some hidden functionality.
In my day, if we wanted canyon reverb on our acoustic guitars, we'd have to go to the nearest canyon to record. It was 40 furlongs to the nearest canyon, and acoustic guitars were made out of brick at the time due to the great brick surplus of aught-nine.
You kids and your fancy wooden acoustic guitars don't know how easy you have it. I know you can't see me right now, but I'm shaking my fist in a very adamant fashion.
OWEN O'MALLEY: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'm Owen O'Malley. We're taking a look at the Fishman AFX Series of Pedals, the acoustic effects pedals. I nearly threw that across the room. Did you see that? This is the AFX Reverb. All of the AFX pedals are true bypass. They're all 9-volt powered, not included. They're all stereo effects. They've got stereo ins and outs.
Like I said, this is the reverb. Let's put this thing up and hear what it sounds like.

Just a bridge piezo transducer. Now let's turn the effect on.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED, STUDIO REVERB SETTING]
This is the first effect called studio. We effect or change our reverb level here. Basically, this is the wet level.

Let's keep it up so we can really hear the effect. You can change the tone from bright to warm, and this is your decay time. Here's a short decay.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED]
Here's a long decay.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED]
Now each of these different modes here gets sort of successively longer. The next one after studio we have is room.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED, ROOM REVERB SETTING]
And we'll just listen to each one in it's longest decay time setting.

Here's our plate reverb.

Quite a long decay time on that, very present reverb sound. Here's our chamber sound.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED, CHAMBER REVERB SETTING]
Good. This one is called stage.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED, STAGE REVERB SETTING]
We've got concert.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED, CONCERT REVERB SETTING]
Interesting thing about the concert setting, it's actually based on Symphonhy Hall in Boston.

I've never been there so I can't confirm nor deny. The next one we have here is cathedral. I don't know which cathedral this one is modeled after.

And now, the last setting here is canyon. Canyon, you'll hear, has a slightly different, sort of a delayed attack time.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED, CANYON REVERB SETTING]
You hear how it's sort of like the first, the early reflections are a little bit delayed in Canyon.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH THE FISHMAN AFX REVERB ENGAGED, CANYON REVERB SETTING]
Now normally, when you turn this switch off, you know, even if we've got our long sort of reverb trail going, this one lasts for a time, okay now, if we hit it [STRUMS GUITAR AND BYPASSES DELAY] normally that kind of cuts it off before it actually decays. You can actually go to a different reverb mode with this thing, excuse me. If we unplug the pedal like so, and we hold down the footswitch while we plug it back in, notice how the acoustic effects like blinks. Now, we've switched modes so that when we turn the effect off, the reverb will spill over into the bypass mode that's why it's called reverb spill so let's listen to our [PLAYS THE E STRING], you noticed that we turned it off and the reverb just keeps going. If you want to switch it back to your sort of "Reverbus Interruptus mode", just repeat the processes and unplug it, hold down the footswitch while you plug it back in, and now we are in rude interrupt.
On the side of the pedal here, we have a gain adjust. Let's see. It says, "Normal" or "Boost". The manual tells you to put it on boost if you're using a magnetic soundhole pickup, and just normal is what we've been using it on because we're using a higher output piezo transducer pickup.
So that was the Fishman AFX Reverb. You've been watching Gearwire.Com, and I am Owen O'Malley. What do you think about that?
