Future Retro Revolution And Quasimidi Rave-O-Lution: The Revolution As A Filter
Revolutionaries unite as DJ Puzzle AKA Jason Donnelly connects the Quasimidi Rave-O-Lution 309 to his cybernetic pizza shaped Future Revolution. Puzzle uses the Rave-O-Lution for his initial drum beat while the Revolution takes care of filtering and a massive range of effects to be manipulated in real time.
Check out this video to see the two similarly-named units in action together and try not to get confused by the nomenclature of electronic gear.
JASON DONNELLY: Jason Donnelly here with Gearwire.Com, and once again we are here with the Future Retro Revolution, and in this scenario I’m going to run an external audio signal through the Revolution using its onboard DSP and filter. And then right here is my Rave-o-Lution, not to be confused with the Revolution. The Rave-O-Lution will be playing drumbeats a bassline, and that will come out and into the Revolution, and the Revolution will then be going out to my mixer.
Let’s take a look at the back panel. So here is the Revolution audio input. This is the output from the external source, the Rave-O-Lution drum machine. Over here we have our main audio out. This is going to the mixer, and then I have a MIDI in to sync this box to the drum machine, so this will be set to external sync and it will slave to the drum machine.
We’re now going to turn the Revolution on, push the song button, push the MIDI button, and by default that would be set to internal. You have an up and down arrow here. Select up to external, exit your MIDI, and now this device will slave to an external device and will sync.
Okay, so on this channel here, I have the processed signal from the Revolution. This is the drum machine, the actual beat that’s being processed. I’ll show you the difference between the two.
[JASON DONNELLY PLAYS DRUM MACHINE TRACKS THEN SOLOS FILTERED DRUM TRACK]
Here’s the filtered beat on this channel.
[JASON DONNELLY INTRODUCES THEN SOLOS UNFILTERED DRUM TRACK]
Here’s the unfiltered beat on this channel.
[JASON DONNELLY PLAYS DRUM MACHINE TRACKS, ALTERNATES EMPHASIS BETWEEN FILTERED AND UNFILTERED DRUM TRACKS, AND THEN MIXES BOTH DRUM TRACKS]
So now that we have our cables connected and MIDI set to external on the Revolution, press the play button, and that puts it in play mode. It’s waiting now for the master device to tell it to start playing, so now I will hit play on the drum machine.

Now they’re both in sync.

Speaking here what it’s doing to the sound, right now I’m using a low pass filter.

We also have a chorus and reverb...,

...another hall, and back to my low pass filter.
Once again, press play on the Revolution that activates play mode, and now it’s waiting for the master device to start. I press play on the master device.

Now as you can see there, completely in sync.

Into the Rave-O -- sorry. [INDISCERNIBLE] Why do I have to use these two pieces? It’s all too much alike.
