Future Retro Revolution: Revolutionary In Every Sense Of The Word
We're back with more of DJ Puzzle [aka Jason Donnelly] and his Future Retro Revolution -- the circular 303 emulator. In this video, Jason overviews the effects and demonstrates how to use the step sequencer to program where the effects should activate in your beat.
Check out how these wet mixes entice DJ Puzzle to ride the Revolution's knobs for hours.
JASON DONNELLY: Jason Donnelly here with Gearwire.Com, and this is the Future Retro Revolution. The Revolution is a Roland TB-303 emulator. It is analog. It has a built-in DSP. You can run an external signal through it and process external sound. It also has MIDI I/O and an overdrive and a waveform selection, and CV in/out and gate out, and basically it’s a really badass 303 emulator.

So here we have the signal being passed through the Revolution using its onboard DSP and filter. This is a room reverb right here. You have your mix R and L for left and right, and this is your wet and dry mix.

We’re going mono so we’re on the left channel. Wet.

Now, I’d like to show you the step sequencer on the Revolution as it’s being used to control the effect on or off throughout the steps. There are 16 steps, they go around hence the name revolution. If I clear all of them...,

...you won’t get any effect. Now this is just the straight beat right off of the source. We’ll turn that down so you can see what it’s doing. Press step 1, effect comes in on step 1. You can sort of hear the little thumping sound or I can use the reverb to give you a better idea as to what it’s doing, or a delay. So now, if I add more steps...,

...it triggers the effect on these steps. If you want the entire signal processed throughout the loop, simply select all of them.

Hold the clear button down, it clears them out.

Let’s bring the original signal back in.

Adjusting the parameters in real time on the Revolution is quite simple since there are knobs for just about everything. These two are my favorite knobs here, the cutoff and resonance. I’ll definitely ride those knobs for hours...,

...and I’ll show you why. Let’s go to the dry signal now. We’re just getting the filter itself on this.

You can hear the huge difference in the filter pattern.

Now, I’ll clear few of the steps so you’ll hear the signal cutting out.

So there you have it. We used the Revolution as a standalone DSP and filter. Really cool stuff, great for playing live. Jason Donnelly with Gearwire.Com. Thanks for watching.
I’ll definitely ride those knobs for hours.
