American Science And Surplus: Overstock Bounty For All

July 06, 2007
Video Monitor at American Science and Surplus
Gearwire's Rob Warmowski got a bug in his bonnet a couple weeks ago to find an excuse to hang out at one of Chicago's not-so-well-kept secrets, the illustrious American Science and Surplus. If you like to tinker, and build, and otherwise fool around - not to mention if you have a weakness for freaky discontinued toys and surplus gas masks - this is the place for you.

In the first installment, Rob discovers an amazing deal on a Galileo video monitor, and we scratch our heads over another enticing little item. Check out the video for the details.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Hey everybody. Rob Warmowski for Gearwire.Com, and we're standing in front of American Science and Surplus, the northwest side of Chicago's most famous goofy store for musicians and project audio people. Let's check out what they've got inside. It's amazing.

Well, we're here at the tools and audio isle at American Science and Surplus, and we're going to check out some stuff that's on the shelves today. Whenever you come here, it's completely different. Stuff that you saw the last time you were here is gone. Stuff that you have never seen before is here, and let's just experience what's on these shelves.

One thing that pops to mind away. If you are a VJ and you have a need to have a video signal being piped back to a private location or rather a performance location, a nice lightweight vide monitor might be something right up your alley. Well, for 10 bucks, right here on the shelves at American Science and Surplus is something called the Galileo. Now, what is the Galileo? Well, you crack it open and you see that it is exactly that. It is a small video monitor that will run off of NTSC or PAL formats. Here's your power switch. Here's something called the synchronizer, brightness and contrast controls, and on the back here there's the simplest thing in the world. It is video in cable port along with a 12-volt DC adapter connection. And then inside the package we've got a wall-wart for 12-volt DC, and it also seems to come with a car charger, a car power unit for 12 volts as well.

So for 10 bucks, you got a video playback and monitoring system all in a mobile case right here called the Galileo. Where do these come from? What were they for originally? We don't know. They're here at American Science and Surplus. It's a mystery. We try not to ask too many questions.
