I remember Earth Day so well, it's like it was yesterday! Wait, it was? Well, better late than never, I say, for Genelec to announce the new Genelec 8020B active, bi-amped studio monitors.
What do these new monitors have to do with environmentalism? It's quite simple, really. The 8020B's are basically identical to the 8020A's, except for one minor change: the volume and on/off controls are now separate. Before, if users wanted to turn off these active monitors, they had to turn the volume level all the way counter-clockwise until it clicked, meaning that when the monitors were powered on again, the volume level was invariably changed. Having to recalibrate levels every time the 8020As were turned on and off, most users simply left them on, and engaged the mute switch.
By adding a separate power switch in the back of the monitors, Genelec is encouraging 8020B owners to turn the monitors off when not in use, saving hours upon kilowatt-hours of electricity. Kudos, sirs and ladies, kudos.
The only other change to the B from the A is the removal of the second, rear-positioned XLR connector, probably to offset the cost of the added switch. Otherwise, their still the same active, bi-amped Genelecs, sporting a 4" bass driver and .75" tweeter, each powered by 20 watts. The 8020Bs are especially well-suited to non-optimal monitoring situations, such as where cramped spaces might yield disruptive reflections, bass coupling, etc. The die-cast housing, Iso-Pod mounting and Directivity Control Waveduide combine to yield degrees of articulation across the frequency specturm, as well as higher-than normal volumes for the size and output-rating of the 8020B.
