Genelec 8260A: Another Example Of The Form Follows Function Ideal

Genelec 8260A

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of studio monitors are their black boxes or cabinets with four sides, corners, edges, and of course cones. While being pretty standard, not everybody believes that a straight-edged box design is the best cabinet structure such as Genelec Oy. Getting out of the box with a new sophisticated design, the Genelec 8260A three-way DSP System is about to make an entrance into the 127th AES convention.

Upon first look, the 8260A looks nothing like your usual four-cornered box. Strictly speaking, the speaker enclosure is hexagonal and with rounded edges. Describing the proprietary design called the Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE) is just merely scratching the surface. This rugged enclosure's rounded edges, gently curved front and sides allows for minimized diffraction to yield impressive imaging quality.

Getting deeper into the 8260A, we discover DCW (a modern waveguide technology) and the Minimum Diffraction Coaxial Driver (MDC). This design combines Genelec's proprietary MDC surface with the enclosure front shape for control of the speaker's directivity. The MDC is a driver design that features a midrange driver cone which forms a smooth, continuous surface between the tweeter and the enclosure to prevent acoustical diffractions. This design then contributes to DCW behavior where the treble and midrange drivers couple coherently over their full operating bandwidths as a single coincident point source.

While we have just all of that going on inside, Genelec took great leaps to make their 8200 Series monitors adapt to every possible studio environment with the Genelec AutoCal and Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM). The GLM manages loudspeaker functions such as crossover filters, driver equalizers, driver position alignment, room response alignment, calibration, and equalization related filters as well as distance compensating delays. The Genelec AutoCal automatically allows the 8260A to adapt to any room environment by calibrating the accurate frequency response appropriate for the room.

The great thing about having A Genelec 8260A for your studio is that it relieves you of the stress of having to consider room acoustics and modifying it accordingly to suit your listening preferences. The automatic room calibration functions ensure that you always have an accurate listening experience while working on your mixes. A pristine listening experience is every musician's aspiration and the Genelec 8260A brings you closer to that.
