Kenny G's Bass Player For Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings
It's 1992 again in the Gallery. The magazine is Guitar Player and the company is Dean Markley pushing their Blue Steel bass strings. Pictured is one Vail Johnson, bass player for noted soprano-saxophone Smoove-Jazz titan Kenny G. Either Mr. Johnson is proud of his Nordic heritage , or the ad concept is a real reach: Blue Steel strings are produced "cryogenically", a process that involves exposing the strings to super-low temperatures. So naturally, they got Kenny G's bass player to pose as a Viking, because...because...nothing says "cold" like a Viking? Or something.
Rob Warmowski: I know what you're thinking: Kenny G has a bass player? The bass is an instrument with guts! The bass has presence! The bass is not an instrument foremost in your mind when you are riding in an elevator or taxicab plugging your ears to keep out the tweedley-toodle of the awful Mr. G and his saccharine, obnoxious un-jazz arrangements. And yet, this ad proves without a doubt: no instrument is immune to the cruel abuses of the marketplace. N-n-n-no Bull.

Kenny G Sucks
Man- up
Hey anonymous, man up and post your name. I'm not afraid. Wonderful World is less 'jazzy' than most of tunes Kenny has written, so get off your high horse. As for my playing, do you know anything about me? Check out some videos on youtube. Just search my name and come back with some cute response.
All you idiotic Kenny G haters sicken me; you take anonymous pot- shots without any real substance. Childish ranting seems to be what drives the blogs these days, so I shouldn't be surprised. This comment also applies to the person named Rob Warmowski.
I'm with you
Anonymous postings are annoying. We actually met Kenny at NAMM, and he seems like a decent guy. He even let one of our crew members take a picture with him while throwing up the metal horns.
cowardly kenny g haters
I noted a couple other comments about my Viking heritage and I would love to discuss it in person with anyone, anytime, anyplace. Thanks, VAIL

I'm a pianist living on the East coast. I've known Vail's buddy Ron Powell for almost 30 years and played with Vail on a few occasions. Do any of you know how difficult it is to hold down a job like Kenny's? Not only do you have to play very well but the line of other bass players wanting to grab your job is longer than you can imagine. Trust me, all of you sit at home bass players have a long way to go to hold down that position in Kenny's band. ....and doing it consistantly night after night is another story. I've probably made a mistake in offering a serious comment but it frosts my ass when couch-rubbing, weekend warriors offer their opinions on the music business. Do it for 45 years then pass on your ideas...and as far as a career, stay in law school, it's easier.
huh!
I didn't know that the dad from Family Matters had Viking heritage! Oh wait, that was Reginald VelJohnson.
