February, 1990 Guitar Player: GIT
The Guitar Institute of Technology is one of many entries in the lucrative music-career-preparation industry, but no competing school has a funnier name. Somebody once harrumphed that the United Kingdom and the United States were home to "two peoples separated by a common language" and it's true - there are many amusing misunderstandings of common words between US and UK speakers. Here is one. In the UK, the word "git" means "stupid, contemptible or unpleasant person". In the Appalachian section of the US, it means "to get or to leave". In the 1990 pages of Guitar Player magazine, it means "vaguely psychedelic photograph of a stoned Ibanez player contemplating a career in rock music."
Rob Warmowski: Having given the world alumni including John Frusciante, Rivers Cuomo and one Jennifer Batten, (well-known to Gearwire Gallery fans already) GIT is not content to rest on its laurels, or its original name. GIT is now marketed as the Musician's Institute, which should keep the smirks off the pasty faces of those across the pond. This ad makes me chuckle in exactly the same way I do when I see a guy walking around wearing a t-shirt that says "Tool." It's like: Oh, you're a tool, thanks for the warning!

Well, I'm no boffin, but I
