D'Addario Strings February 1990

Top Wound - D'Addario strings ad from 1990

D'Addario strings have shown themselves to be the kings of the Gearwire Gallery "movie spoof" sub-genre. In this 1990 entry from Guitar Player magazine the company has settled on imagery recalling the smash hit film "Top Gun" to carry its selling message to the guitarists of the world: Use our strings and you will relate somehow to this smash hit film as a result. Sounds ridiculous, but this stuff actually works. Oddly, this ad was run far past the prime of the film, Top Gun having been released four years earlier. That inconsistency hasn't altered the valuation of this ad at all it would seem.

Rob Warmowski: In the event that D'Addario wishes to extend the tradition of film spoof advertising, let me pitch a few ideas their way:

  • The Bad Lieutenant for D'Addario strings: We see a nude Harvey Keitel, arms spread apart in the famous emotionally wrenching pose from the film. Only this time, a lime-green Jackson MG series guitar with a pointy headstock is dangling from his shoulder, the guitar's body obscuring Harvey's junk. Tag line: Strung out. D'Addario. No? Too obscure? Okay, how about -
  • Pirates of The Carribean III for D'Addario strings: We get Keith Richards in full pirate costume from the film wearing one of his Telecasters without the 6th string on it and Johnny Depp has wrapped the missing string around Keith's forearm, raising a vein-- oh, too expensive. Okay, how about...
  • Little Miss Stringshine: We see the eight-year old redheaded girl from the film but she's wearing one of those Daisy Rock guitars, and -- guys? Hey, guys! Where are you going?

I just love D'addario

I just love D'addario strings. D’Addario's sound generally bright, whether you’re playing nickel-plate, pure nickel, or acoustic brass/bronze strings. They have a nice growl to them that sounds like freshly wound metal – very nice. I’ve played strings from other manufacturers – strings bearing virtually the exact same specs as the XLs I’ve played. In general, the D’Addarios growl a little more, sing a little more, and produce a mellow tone when played easy on clean.

That's a fun idea from D'Addario, but even if they hadn't done that, I would still have used just their strings. Even if I buy a new instrument, I always make sure to put new D'Addarios on. But still, quite a funny spoof.
