Gibson "The Paul" With Convenient Sweat-Sluicing Bevel

December 04, 2008
Gibson "The Paul" Charlie Pickett

Remember when Gibson sold a lower-cost version of the Les Paul, but called it by its American name "The Paul?" Charlie Pickett does. He's got a "The Paul" he snagged off eBay that he just loves, if not for its looks, then for its ability to handily wick perspiration away from the sensitive pickups.

I case you're wondering, Mr. Pickett is wearing shorts in this video. No letters.

CHARLIE PICKETT: You probably know more about this than I do, but this is a guitar that's built in around 1980 from the research I could do on it. I got this off eBay for $500. Is it a Les Paul? I call it a Les Paul because it feels heavy. It is heavy. It's got a pretty darn good neck on it. It has no binding. It has none of the other stuff, and this was put out by Gibson in, like I said, in the early '80s probably, sending that --

PATRICK OGLE: They made it for about three years.

CHARLIE PICKETT: Yeah. Okay, and they made an SG in this. They heavily pushed them because at that point the full-on Les Paul as we call it was quite a bit more money. It's probably double this price at the day. I think this is just a lot of fun guitar. This one has a darn good sense of resonance. It doesn't roll on forever and ever. I switched them out. I didn't like the pickups on it. They were a little shrill. They were 4A's and 490's but they just didn't seem to match this guitar very well. I switched it out. I got classic '57 front and backs, you know. I always thought the classic '57 was equal, but there's the front pickup and the back pickup, so anyway. Instead of the black pickguards, I wanted the cream. I thought it would just fit better with the brown. That's just a little, you know, too much finicky I guess part of me, but as you can see, you know, this is just a working guitar again, you know. The sweat that comes off here rolls down to here. I don't clean the pickups up [LAUGHING], you know, and it's got a little buildup that I will scratch soon.

I love the way the Duncan [SOUNDS LIKE] markers are stuffed and I'm not down on it but I just think, you know, if you want good round sound, it can be the Classic '57 period, in my opinion, and I've had Burstbucker 1's, Burstbucker 2's, and I'm glad that they still make the Classic '57 and hadn't replaced it with the Burstbucker.
