[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH]

OWEN O'MALLEY: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. This is the gig-fx Mega-Wah. The gig-fx Mega-Wah is a multimode stereo wah pedal. There are stereo inputs and stereo outputs. You can either have it right in the middle of the stereo signal chain. You can use it to create a stereo signal chain like I'm doing right now, mono in and stereo out. You can just do mono in, mono out. There's a couple of other cool routing things you can do with this pedal, and it has four basic modes. Well, really five or even six different modes on it, depending on different configurations of the controls on this pedal.

What you're listening to right now is a pretty unique stereo mode. Basically, we've got the left channel operating like a traditional wah pedal whereas the switch moves towards the heel it's more bassy and treble at the toe, and our right channel is the exact reverse of that which is why you're getting this kind of cool sort of totally controllable stereo sort of like phasing effect.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH]

A pretty unique effect, probably the most unique effect on this pedal. Let's just go through some of the different modes. If we switch this button right here from reverse back to normal, this is will just bring it back to, you know, having both channels in line and right now we're in the basic, what's called Cry mode which is the most basic wah mode.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, CRY MODE]

Now the next mode is called Mega, which basically is a bass boost.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, MEGA MODE]

Sort of a more pronounced wah mode. Now, in these first two modes, you can use these three controls on the right. We've got our gain pot right here. We've got our resonance, which is basically like a Q control. It basically controls how intense the effect is, so let's turn the resonance down a little bit and use the wah.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH]

And now let's turn the resonance up. So, that was the sensitivity, sorry. I'll turn the resonance down a little bit.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH]

And now I'll turn the resonance up.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH]

Just a sort of more intense notching effect and a more intense filter sweep. Let's bring these guys back center. The next mode here is called Trigger mode. Now, this is basically an envelope filter.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, TRIGGER MODE]

In this mode, the footswitch here is bypassed.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, TRIGGER MODE]

And you can also reverse this mode so that you.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, TRIGGER MODE]

So, you basically have a sort of downward facing envelope. You adjust the sensitivity and the resonance on this one here, so.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, TRIGGER MODE]

You can bring the sensitivity down.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, TRIGGER MODE]

Now, the final mode here on this mode switch is an auto-wah...

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, AUTO-WAH MODE]

Which is just a timed, cyclical wah.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, AUTO-WAH MODE]

So, you know, if your ankle hurts or something, I guess you would use that. You can adjust the rate.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, AUTO-WAH MODE]

If we put reverse on while we've got our sort of auto-wah going on, we get this very steady sort of phasing effect.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, AUTO-WAH MODE]

That's about as fast as it goes. Now, the final mode if we have this sort of like, you know, reverse thing off here, is we can flip this switch and just turn the Mega-Wah into a volume pedal.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH, VOLUME PEDAL MODE]

Although it's kind of got a very sudden slope here, volume slope. Let's go back into wah mode here. Now, there's no actual physical switch to turn this effect on. The effect is off when the rocker is all the way back. And then it's engaged right there...

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH]

...which I had my doubts about at first but you actually don't notice it so much when you're in the midst of playing. There are a couple of times where you'll kind of go all the way back here and you'll turn the effect off and you don't mean to. That's kind of the only drawback of this. There is enough give sort of at the bottom of the range of this effect that you won't be sort of tempted to, you know, lean back all the way on the rocker. The benefit of this is that there is an optical switch so there's no sort of like physical switching that can go bad, so it'll probably have a longer life expectancy than most of your sort of lower priced wah pedals plus it's just built like a tank. It's in this pretty heavy gauge die cast metal housing, really heavy gauged I-beam shaped pedal here.

Let's listen to this guy with our amps cranked up so we can hear what it sounds like through some distortion.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH WITH DISTORTION]

And let's just for fun let's put it in reverse here. You'll see what that sounds like.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE GIG-FX MEGA-WAH WITH DISTORTION< REVERSE MODE]

So obviously, you probably need a little bit of more tweaking here to get your distortion tones even but it' a pretty unique effect, and the standard wah sound out of the Mega-Wah is pretty thick, pretty awesome sounding wah, so all in all a pretty great pedal, great addition to the pantheon of wah pedals available for you.
