G&L L-2000: Necks In White Satin

September 25, 2008
G&L L-2000

Get rock-rock-rockin' with Owen O'Malley as he checks out the G&L L-2000 bass guitar. In this demonstration, Owen shows you what all those rotary knobs and toggle switches can do for your tone while sliding his hand across all stretches of the satin-finished neck. It's the kind of neck that Harry Tasker would love to snap in half during a spy mission, but if you're not Harry Tasker, you might prefer just slapping and popping it around a little bit.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

OWEN O'MALLEY: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'm Owen O'Malley, and this is the G&L L-2000 Tribute Bass. G&L, as I'm sure you know, is the company that was founded by George Fullerton and Leo Fender. So, these are sort of like, you know, Fender's cousins, these basses. These guys have two pretty high-output humbucker pickups. It's got a nice six-bolt neck joint right here. The neck is maple topped with rosewood, and it is a satin finish on the neck so it's a very quick feeling neck. The controls down here from the preamp and the EQ, there are three large rotary controls right here and then three mini toggles. You can get a lot of different sounds out of this bass. There is an active preamp. Right now it's off.

Turn it on with this last mini-toggle here, putting it in the middle position...

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

...you can hear it's a little more of a hi-fi sound, a little fuzzier or fizzier. You can control the highs and lows of these two knobs. The one closer to the bridge is the bass.

And then the one in the middle is the treble.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

This last knob right here is just your master control.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

The mini-toggle in the middle here, actually let's go back to this first mini toggle here. There's one more position. If it's all the way up, it's a high-end boost. So right now it's just the middle, bring it up...

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

...and it just sort of like extends the high shelving so you get a little bit more pick attack basically if you want to play some really rocking bass. Rock, rock, rocking bass.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

You get that real sort of like piano string sound. Okay, so now over to this mini toggle here. In the middle, the mini toggle in the middle basically switches between series or parallel wiring for the two pickups here. When it's down, it is in series. If we put it up, it is in parallel -- or rather the other way around. It's in parallel first. If we bring it up, it's in series, which is a higher output.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

Again, here’s parallel...

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

...and here's series.

Now, the last toggle here switches between the two pickups. If we have it all the way at the bottom, we've only got the bridge pickup selected.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

And if we have it all the way up, we've only got the neck pickup selected.

So, as you can hear the sort of overall sort of main sound characteristic of this guy is a very sharp attack, an almost like automatically scooped mid with everything. It's a great rock bass like modern rock bass. It also has some pretty excellent slap tones.

[OWEN O'MALLEY PERFORMING WITH THE G&L L-2000 TRIBUTE BASS]

Yeah, so there you go. That is the G&L L-2000 Tribute Bass. This is the four-string. It also comes in a five-string variety called the L-2500. Until next time, this is Owen O'Malley, and you've been watching Gearwire.Com. See you later.
