Gretsch G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Guitar: Orange You Glad Owen Didn't Play More Stray Cats? (Video)
May 12, 2011
It's not automatic, systematic, or hydromatic, but you can bet most of the ne'r-do-well kids from Grease would rather own a Gretsch G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Guitar than sport a hicky from Kenickie. Now that I have no idea what I'm talking about, why don't you check out the video demo Owen did on the aforementioned, Korean-made gem.
Yes it's an overseas origin axe, but don't let that dissuade you from checking out a Gretsch G5012 at your earliest convenience. No matter what style of music you play, the Electromatic Hollowbody can pull it off — possibly exception being high-gain metal. Then again, the neck does shred.

Distortion Pedal
what distortion pedal do you use while playing the queens of the stone age-esque part?
I bought one of these bad
I bought one of these bad boys back in February of this year and not one day does by where I don't find myself playing. It's a solid guitar and capable of cranking out a lot of sounds. The only issue I have, and it's a small one, is that the bridge isn't secured so you find yourself having to reintonate it on a somewhat regular basis which only takes about two minutes. If you're in the market for a new guitar take word of an internet stranger and check the G5120 out.
tone deaf
How does that sound anything like the Gretschs of the fifties? The strings sound dead. The guitar sounds like it's plugged direct into the computer. I've played this guitar recently and I agree that the neck is nice, but the tone is a dog. It has none of the brightness that you'd expect from a "rockabilly" inspired instrument from Gretsch. The question is whether a pickup upgrade will improve the sound on a guitar made of laminated wonder wood (similar in concept to mystery meat). That is the question. I had high hopes for this guitar. I guess there is potential there, if you put some money into it, but that laminate top will never add to the tone. All you can do is compensate for it.
