Gretsch Duo jet sound check

By: Rick Holland (not verified)
Gretsch is known for its clear sounds. Its best known artists were people like Chet Atkins and George Harrison(the Beatles) I was dismayed by the gentalman who sound checked this guitar. He used an overdrive while soundchecking. I could not get a good sample of the sound of the guitar with all that overdrive on. I would advise when you are sound checking for a perspective buyer, you use clean tones too emphisize the sound of the guitar and not the effects. Thank you.

I agree with Rick. When you're switching between different pups there wasn't much difference since you buried them under all that distortion. I don't have a problem with overdrive, but please use more clean tones.

Duo Jet

I was pretty shocked how this guy knows so little about this guitar. Firstly, this guitar has an ebony fretboard. not a rosewood one. Secondly, when he started talking about the "bridge" he was actually inspecting the Bigsby vibrato instead pointing out that the (real) bridge was an ebony spaced roller bridge. Meanwhile, when he finally got the part name right, he got the vibrato model number wrong since he said "BC3" instead of "B3C". Thirdly, it's sad that he thinks that the Filter'Tron pickups are single coil when everyone else knows that they are humbuckers. Lastly, he forgot to tell everyone that the body has a maple top on the body as well. P.S. - I agree with Rick as well.

Wow, this has got to be the worst review of anything
music-related, ever. But you're doing your best, and
that's what counts...

Please, next time test the cleans along with
the distortion sounds, and explain what you're using
to generate the distortion.

Also read up on the actual specs of the instrument
in question.

DAN AGOSTO: Hi. Welcome to Gearwire.Com. We're taking a look at the Gretsch Duo Jet, the G6128T. The difference between this and some of the other Duo Jets is that it has Filter'Tron pickups. This is a 24.8" scale guitar. We got a semi-hollow chambered body that's made of mahogany, the finish is a gloss urethane (this is the black one), and we also have a mahogany neck. You can see it's set in, bound. The fretboard is also bound. It's a rosewood fretboard. We got these interesting thumbnail inlays. That's something that you see in lots of guitars.

These frets are there's 22 of these. It didn't say what kind. They don't have the information on what kind of frets these are but I believe these are large or jumbo. Standard nut, there's the cover for your truss rod. We have Grover tuners on here. These are the V98C Sta-Tite tuners, and as you can see there's three on each side. If we take a look at the bridge, this bridge is machined very, very well and looks pretty cool. It looks like it was hammered out by hand. Machines may have built it though but it is a Gretsch Bigsby BC3 Vibrato, so [TRIES OUT BIGSBY VIBRATO] it runs on a spring. It's a rolling Bigsby Vibrato. And another interesting thing on here, the strap locks actually are screws and they come off so you can take them on and off. So, it's kind of got their own strap locking system instead of just regular pegs to put your strap on, so that's a nice feature there.

As far as electronics go, we have three knobs on here. This is a master volume right here, and it's up here so when you're playing you can reach over and change volume really quick, not to reach all the way to the other end of the guitar. These other knobs are also volume but this is the volume for the neck pickup, this is the volume for the bridge so no tone pots on here. All the tone is changed via switching and switching your pickups with these two switches. Here's the pickup selector. You can do just the neck pickup. The middle position is both pickups, and third position is the neck pickup, and this is a tone switching switch right here -- or this is a tone switch right here. Right here is probably the most mellow setting. I believe it just controls sort of like a filter so this is the most mellow setting, this is a less filtered setting, and the third setting is the brightest or basically unfiltered or I'm not sure exactly how the circuit is set up but you'll be able to hear the differences. So first let's listen to this first Filter'Tron pickup. These are single -- both the same pickup, both Filter'Tron, both single coil in nature as far as the information on the Gretsch web site goes. So, let's listen to this neck pickup.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, NECK PICKUP]

That's classic rock tone. Let's listen to how this tone switch can change the tone on this pickup.

[DAN AGOSTO AUDITIONS TONE SWITCH, POSITION ONE, ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET]

So, that's position one.

[DAN AGOSTO AUDITIONS TONE SWITCH, POSITION TWO, ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET]

Position two, just slightly brighter, and position three.

[DAN AGOSTO AUDITIONS TONE SWITCH, POSITION THREE, ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET]

That would be the brightest. It's kind of hard to hear on this one but if I chord and switch back and forth you might be able to hear it.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, NECK PICKUP]

All right. Let's check the middle position. Now, this middle position gives you all sorts of different tonal possibilities because not only can you switch the tone switch, you can also adjust the individual volume of each pickup, so.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, NECK AND BRIDGE PICKUP]

So, it's a little bit brighter of a sound than the neck pickup. Let's see what the tone switching does.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, NECK AND BRIDGE PICKUP]

So, also you can control the individual tone of the pickups. I'm leaving this in the middle position, the tone switch, so it's going to be in the middle, and I'm just going to change the individual volumes of the pickups.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, NECK AND BRIDGE PICKUP]

I'm going to turn down the neck pickup first.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, NECK AND BRIDGE PICKUP]

So it's down and back up on the neck pickup, and I'm going to do the bridge pickup next, bring it down then bring it back up.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, NECK AND BRIDGE PICKUP]

All right, so you can see how we can get a lot of different tones out of there. Let's listen to the neck -- the bridge pickup.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, BRIDGE PICKUP]

All right. The middle tone position.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, BRIDGE PICKUP]

And last tone position.

[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE GRETSCH G6128 DUO JET, BRIDGE PICKUP]

And one thing I forgot to mention on this guitar is this plastic pickguard. It's raised with a very thick plastic. It has the Gretsch logo on it. It's pretty cool.

Also with this guitar, you get a really nice hard shell case, molded hard shell case. Let's take a look at that. We got it right here. It closes nice and tight and plush insides. We got a little compartment for accessories, tools, extra strings, things like that. It's a very nice feature.

And so, that is the Gretsch Duo Jet, the G6128T. Thanks for checking it out here at Gearwire.Com.
