G-Sonique Pultronic EQ-110P: An Ingenious Bit Of Retromancy

They sure don't make them like they used to. Now they make them with ones and zeros! The G-Sonique (the audio company that sounds like a shampoo) Pultronic EQ-110P is a recreation of the much-admired Pultec EQP1A vacuum tube equalizer; instead of being built from tubes, circuit boards and folded steel, this one's built out of INFORMATION.

The specific information used to build the G-Sonique plug was actually gleaned from the equipment it emulates. Developers culled "algorithms" and "other technical things" from signals pushed through vintage Pultec units to model their plugin's virtual architecture, an they promise total accuracy in the resultant product.

While you'll have to actually hear the thing and decide for yourself how successful they were, you can see that at least the control layout on the Pultronic EQ-110P is pretty faithful to the original EQ. The virtual signal path travels through two "preamp tubes" with one for highs and the other for lows. There's a low-frequency cut with a preset shelving frequency selector, and three fully parametric EQ controls for Low, Middle and High frequencies.

The post-EQ signal path is comprised of Warmth, Saturation Drive and Brilliance controls, and then a final master output volume. The design of the Pulsonic -- like the Pultec unit -- makes it equally well suited for tracking, mixing and mastering.

To add even further to its real-world mimmickry, the Pulsonic plugin lets you switch out the low and high frequency tubes for different harmonic characteristics. Tube choices include:

  • 5 selectable Low frequency vacuum tube types:
    • Class A Tube
    • Warm tube
    • Vintage tube
    • Dirty vintage tube
    • 12AX7 Tube
  • 6 selectable High frequency vacuum tube types:
    • 12AX7 Tube
    • Classic tube
    • Warm tube
    • Class A Tube
    • Vintage tube
    • Dirty vintage tube

The first 40 customers to purchase the Pultronic EQ-110P will be treated to an introductory price of 19.90 EUR; after that, the plug will be available for 38.00 EUR.
