1977 Guild D-25 Takes RedNails Solo
Wearing a shirt that presumably hides the name of his favorite guitar chord, Esus9, Dan Marshall -- the sole remaining member of RedNails, shows us his 1977 Guild D-25. As a solo act, Dan realized he'd need a trusty six-string to take his act to the stage, so he visited no less of an authority than George Gruhn to pick up the 1977 Guild D-25 we see in this video.
DAN MARSHALL: I'm Dan Marshall, and the band is now me and it's RedNails.
I was looking for a six-string acoustic because I have a 12-string, an old Gibson that I really like but I needed six because when my bandmates left and I continued being the band, I knew that to do shows I'd probably end up doing just acoustic shows.
So, I was looking online, mostly on different guitar web sites to study the other and finding vintage stuff. I wanted vintage, did not want new, and when I found the D-25's I like they way they looked, I found a couple at local music stores but they weren't quite right when I played them but they sounded good.
So, we went down to Nashville where we were going to see a band play, and I went to Gruhn Guitars because I've been checking out their web site forever and I knew that Mr. Gruhn was supposed to be an expert on the Guild guitars.
Yeah, I found that one, just sitting right there. It was the first one I saw when I walked in, sat down, played it for five minutes, looked at the price tag. It was the maximum that I had decided I would spend on a car -- or on a guitar to the penny, and I was like, "Well okay. Cool."
PATRICK OGLE: How much did it cost?
DAN MARSHALL: It was $800. The ones that I found online where in, like once on eBay were running more six to nine hundred but, you know, eBay is there's going to be cracks in it that they didn't tell me about? Is it going to sound like ass? And then, you know, I have to deal with turning around and reselling it on eBay and dealing with that, and then the ones that I found online were running between 800 and like a thousand, maybe 1,100, and so it did seem like a good price and it sounded great and it's been nothing but great ever since.
I'm pretty sure that I've seen natural ones and I believe I've seen like a brown or cherry burst, but I don't know at what point they made those. Those could have been made in the '80s or even the '90s. I don't know. I'm pretty sure that they don't make this model because I've seen them online. I don't mean that based on the web site or stuff but it's been long since I have [OVERLAPPING].
