June 06, 2007
Gearwire review of the Guild Gad-50
Gearwire's Patrick Ogle reviews the Guild GAD-50, looking at the nuances of the classic acoustic guitar. Guild's GAD-50 was designed with a body shape that is one of the most popular acoustic body shapes in the world and has been used for over 70 years. The Guild GAD-50 has solid Indian Rosewood on the back and sides, a solid spruce top with scalloped bracing, a one-piece mahogany neck with the traditional dovetail neck joint.

[PATRICK OGLE PLAYING THE GUILD GAD-50]

PATRICK OGLE: Okay. This is a Guild GAD-50. It is a fantastic guitar. If I lived in a state where they allowed human-guitar unions, I would marry this guitar. It's got rosewood back and sides, spruce top. It sounds really good. It has a great range. You get the highs, mids, lows, and the best thing about it is you can probably pick this guitar up with a case for about $675.

If you're environmentally conscious, you may want to shoot out a note to Guild Fender about the wood in this guitar because, you know, Indian Rosewood, but you know that's only if you're environmentally conscious.

Another thing about this one is a lot of folks are going to like it because it has a clear pickguard. You don't have a lacquer smell on it. It smell like and it feels like it’s a guitar that's been around a while even though it if it's actually a new guitar. The fretboard's rosewood, it's a 20-fret guitar, and one of the things to keep in mind is that I tend to just play rhythm so people that want to do the picking thing, this guitar probably works across the board. It's somebody that anybody could use. It also has -- I remember years ago I talked to a guy who sold -- he was an expert on Persian rugs and I asked him, "How do you tell if it's a valuable rug?" And he looked at me like I was an idiot and he said, "How do you tell if a woman is beautiful?" and that is kind of that intangible thing you have with this guitar. It's just -- There's just something about it. It really plays well and it's just good.
