Gunpoint Recording Studios: Bob Popp Performs Some Recording Experiments
Bob Popp has an idea that's so crazy, it just might work. He's recording guitar out of three different amp and cab combinations using a modded Yamaha Soldano and Marshall SLX-900 amplifiers through a Marshall 4x12 and a modded Sun cabinet. He's got Shure mics of all varieties lined up for the job too, and not just your standard SM57.
Best of all, he's aiming to get his desired sound solely by gain stage levels and mic placement. Bob doesn't even want to touch the EQ knobs. Stay tuned to Gearwire for the next video from Gunpoint Recording Studios and the results of this experiment.
BOB POPP: Hi. This is Bob Popp of Gunpoint Recording Studios. You can find us at myspace.com/gunpointrecordingstudios. We're going to talk about my awesome guitar tracks that we're going to record.
First off, we had to decide what I was going to play, how I was going to play it, and that took weeks and years and many, many moons. We've got all that out of the way, and we've decided what microphones, what cabinets, what amplifiers.
I've chosen a Yamaha/Soldano which they don't make anymore, but they still make Soldano amplifiers and they still make Yamaha amplifiers. We also are using a Marshall SLX 900, which is made famous by the guys in KISS and Slayer. We're using a Marshall 412 cabinet with four 100-watt speakers in it at 8 ohms. We're also using a Sun cabinet that has been slightly modified with an Electro-Voice 200-watt M-Series, and the Soldano also has a modification.; it has a 70-watt Celestion speaker in it. It came stocked with a hundred.
On the Soldano, we're using a Beta 56 which is normally a drum or horn mic, but because of the tone that I'm using it kind of fits right in there, a very percussive mid-rangey sound. On the Marshall cabinet with the 100-watt speakers, we're using a KSM32 cardiod microphone that's also a condenser. It's one of those big ones, expensive. And on the EV, we're just using a 57.
We're going to take those three channels. We're going to put them through channels 1, 2, and 3 on the board. The reason we're doing that is that this is normally drum stuff. My guitar stuff, I normally do here, but we're going to experiment a little bit today. We're going to use absolutely no EQ, just gain stage and mic placement to get our sound. So, why don't we go over to the other room. I'll play some guitar. [PH] Steve Durnburg will move some mics around, and you can see what we're doing.
