Hal Leonard Tone Manual: How To Get The Best Electric Guitar Tone, Period
In his latest book, Tone Manual ($24.99), now available from Hal Leonard Books, author Dave Hunter discusses in great detail all the factors that contribute to tone. Accordingly called Tone Manual, the book will serve as a guide for guitarists seeking a way to produce superior sounds.
In the Tone Manual, Hunter breaks down the individual components of the electric guitar rig -- guitar, amplifier, speakers, cabinets, effects, and peripherals -- and examines how each piece of equipment contributes to superior or inferior sound. He offers tips on improving and making the most of the gear you already have, all with reference to interviews with artists and manufacturers.
In addition, the new book will cover the evolution of the guitarist's concept of "good tone," providing an extensive guide to recorded examples of playing generally considered "tonally superior." Hunter cites examples from the early days of electric jazz, blues, country, and rock and roll; from the classic rock, blues rock, and heavy rock heyday of the late 1960s and early '70s; and from myriad contemporary artists.
Throughout the 192-page Tone Manual, a series of more than 30 "Tone Tips" deliver quick, digestible, practical bits of information to help electric guitarists improve their sound and better understand their equipment. The Tone Manual also includes helpful diagrams and a cover-mounted CD.
Dave Hunter is a musician, writer, and editor who has contributed to numerous publications and TV and radio documentaries, as well as reviewed guitar amplification gear. Along with Tone Manual, Hunter has written a number of other books, including the Interactive Fender Bible, Guitar Rigs, Start Guitars, The Guitar Amp Handbook, Guitar Effects, The Guitar Pickup Handbook, Play Acoustic, and the Totally Interactive Guitar Bible. Dave records and gigs with The Molenes. He lives in Portsmouth, N.H.

Hal also has a youtube channel with simple guitar tutorials if you're a beginner. I learned a couple of songs with the help of those. He has a very good method, it's like he knows your next move or mistake as if you were standing in front of him.
