Harmony H165: How To Fix A Guitar That's Imploding
Way back in November, Patrick Ogle showed us his deteriorating Harmony H165. He said that he was going to go have it fixed, and we were all like, "Yeah right, Patrick. That's what you always say."
Well, it looks like Patrick took some initiative and took his H165 to Third Coast Guitars where Chris Eudy checks out the missing brace and talks about what it would take to fix everything up.
CHRIS EUDY: Hello. My name is Chris Eudy. I'm the owner of Third Coast Guitar Service.
PATRICK OGLE: This is a Harmony. It's an old H165.
CHRIS EUDY: Okay.
PATRICK OGLE: It's solid mahogany.
CHRIS EUDY: Mmm hmm. Yeah.
PATRICK OGLE: A number of problems with this one.
CHRIS EUDY: Okay.
CHRIS EUDY: And one of which is if you -- Well, this stuff is just cosmetic. It's got junk on it, this stuff here.
CHRIS EUDY: Sure.
PATRICK OGLE: There were two inexplicably two pickguards in case I guess you played left-handed. I have no idea.
CHRIS EUDY: Flip it around.
PATRICK OGLE: Yeah. But you can see it's kind of sagging. One of the reasons for this is there's a missing brace.
CHRIS EUDY: Cross brace. Yeah.
PATRICK OGLE: It fell out.
CHRIS EUDY: Yeah.
PATRICK OGLE: I had it and I lost it.
CHRIS EUDY: You lost it. Okay.
PATRICK OGLE: So I don't know what would you -- I mean I would like to have that replaced.
CHRIS EUDY: Yeah. It's a little more difficult, and I can see where the top is deflecting. It's a little more difficult to replace a brace than it is to actually glue a loose brace, obviously because you got to get it all, you know, you got to fit it, you got to make it, especially if you're making a brace.
PATRICK OGLE: Right.
CHRIS EUDY: You got to make it, you got to fit it in the right spot. If I'm not mistaken, these are what's called ladder braced.
PATRICK OGLE: Yeah. Those are ladder, yeah.
CHRIS EUDY: Exactly, like if you look at the back of any acoustic guitar that has braces, the backs on most acoustic guitars are ladder brace, so that's what it looks like on the underside of this. There's braces here, there might be a brace here or maybe a brace here as opposed to like a traditional Martin, which would be an X brace.
PATRICK OGLE: Yeah.
CHRIS EUDY: And it has a pattern where there's the braces run here and here, and then there's some other smaller braces on those guitars as well. So, it's a little more difficult than -- It's a lot more difficult than actually creating a -- Creating a brace is more difficult than, you know, just rebuilding that brace.
PATRICK OGLE: Right.
CHRIS EUDY: But it's doable.
PATRICK OGLE: I mean how much would it be? But what's -- The thing is I could play fine. The brace would guide -- I mean...
CHRIS EUDY: Yeah.
PATRICK OGLE: ...[INDISCERNIBLE] long will it take me.
CHRIS EUDY: Yeah. Exactly. You know, I totally understand.
PATRICK OGLE: And this here is where you can see it's also bowing a little bit in here.
CHRIS EUDY: Yeah. That's just, once again, that's all from -- There's a couple of reasons it may be doing that. The first thing, it's like if you have a car that doesn't start and needs a new starter, you got to put a starter in it before you can see what else might be wrong.
PATRICK OGLE: Right.
CHRIS EUDY: And this, you really got to brace this up to see what else may be going on with it.
PATRICK OGLE: Yeah.
CHRIS EUDY: And the brace, brace off, replacing a brace on this guitar is going to run about $45 to glue it up and another $50 or so to actually make the brace, believe it or not.
PATRICK OGLE: I'll try to find the brace. If I find the brace in the next day or so, I will give you a call...
CHRIS EUDY: Yeah. Let me know.
PATRICK OGLE: ...and I'll bring it in.
CHRIS EUDY: Yeah. Absolutely.
PATRICK OGLE: And then we can do that because that will cut the cost to a reasonable level.
CHRIS EUDY: Yeah. Absolutely. Best case scenario, you know, if you find the brace and we can put that brace back on, you know, then doing the neck reset might not, you know...,
PATRICK OGLE: Be a bad idea.
CHRIS EUDY: ...might not be a bad idea because this guitar could probably play pretty nice.
PATRICK OGLE: Yeah.
