October 02, 2007
Pearl Drums And Zildjian Cymbals

Normally, Rodrigo Sepulveda of Hazel Witch plays on a Pearl drum set with Zildjian cymbals. When Patrick caught up with Rodrigo On The Road, Rodrigo was playing a provided kit.

In this video, Patrick and Rodrigo talk about the challenges of playing a show on a set that is not your normal kit and how Rodrigo overcomes them. Rodrigo also dives into what his usual set up is, and what he wishes it was.

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: I'm Rodrigo. I play drums for Hazel Witch.

PATRICK OGLE: Let me ask you a question. You are playing with your own kit. How is that to walk in to a place where you got to just walk in blind and start playing on a kit you're not -- that's not your normal thing?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: It's a little bit a pain in the butt, man. You know, you're always used to your own kit, you know. You have your stuff where you want it to be, and when it's not your kit it's just always different. But, you know, you do what you can .

PATRICK OGLE: How do you compensate for the issues you have, you know. What do you do?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: You just play it like you're playing in front of thousands of people and just play your heart out, man.

PATRICK OGLE: It doesn't matter even when you're playing on a garbage can, right?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: It doesn't even matter if you're playing on pots and pans, you know. It's awesome.

PATRICK OGLE: So, what's your normal kit? What do you normally use?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: I play on a Pearl. I've had it for like 10 years now. It's about five-piece with a little bass drum, pedals, and two cymbals here and there.

PATRICK OGLE: Why the Pearl?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: That's what I could afford. [LAUGHING]

PATRICK OGLE: [LAUGHING]

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: It's a good set though.

PATRICK OGLE: Okay. Fantastic. Anything else about drums? Cymbals, what d you use?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: Right now, I'm using a Zildjian. I have one Sabian ride, and my brand new pair of hi-hats which, thanks to my cousin over there who works for a music store, got me a good deal, so I was able to afford a decent pair of hi-hats.

PATRICK OGLE: So, if you can have any kit, if any drum kit you can get one, anything you want, what would it be?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: Oh man, first thing that comes to mind is a DW.

PATRICK OGLE: Is a what?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: DW.

PATRICK OGLE: DW?

RODRIGO SEPULVEDA: Drum Workshop, they sound beautiful, or a Gretsch, Sonor. Those are the top that sound the best.
