Ibanez GRG170DX
DAN AGOSTO: Hello. Welcome to Gearwire.Com. Today we're taking a look at the Ibanez GRG170DX. This is in Black Night. It is sort of a reflective black. It has a basswood body. We got a maple neck on this guitar. Take a look at the back and see that it is actually a bolt-on neck and of course it is maple.
Take a look at the other side. We got a rosewood fretboard with the shark fin inlays, and these are 22. These are medium frets on this one. We can take a look higher up on the guitar, and we see we got here like a rosewood or mahogany nut, just plain nut. The headstock has the same color on the front but you can see the change of neck color on the sides.
So, if we move back down on the guitar, take a look at the bridge. This is a Fat 10 bridge. It's a tremolo. It's a spring tremolo. We don't have the bar in here but you'd go in there and like I said, it's spring tremolo and it connects up here. It kind of pivots like right at these two bolts over here, if you move it like that. Hopefully we didn't put it out of tune doing that.
So, if we take a look at the pickups, these are Ibanez PSND pickups. Right here we have a PSND1, a PSND-S, which is a single-coil, and the PSND2 which the hotter version in the neck position. Let's take a listen to what the neck position sounds like. We got a distorted tone going. This guitar is probably good for that sort of thing.

All right, so that's the neck pickup. You'll probably also roll off the tone. There's two knobs on here, volume and the tone, and they're for all the pickups.

That's with the tone all the way down.

Really not much of a difference with this sort of distortion setting. Let's check the next pickup position. This is a five-position switch so we got -- First we have this one. Now we have the single coil and the neck humbucker.

All right. Let's try the single coil position.

We can hear it doesn't really crunch as much.

So, it gets a little more bite to it, single-coil bite to it, so that's a nice option to have.

This is with the tone knob down.
[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE IBANEZ GRG170DX ELECTRIC GUITAR]
All right. Let's try the next position which would be a combination of the neck humbucker and the single coil.
[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE IBANEZ GRG170DX ELECTRIC GUITAR, SINGLE COIL AND BRIDGE HUMBUCKER]
All right. Let's try the neck position, the lead pickup.
[DAN AGOSTO PLAYING ON THE IBANEZ GRG170DX ELECTRIC GUITAR, BRIDGE HUMBUCKER ONLY]
All right, so we got a nice, hot sound coming from that neck pickup. So that's the GRG170DX. This is how you get it. It doesn't come with a case or anything so you have to buy your own gig bag or case from Ibanez or someone who makes a case that fits it. So thanks for checking out this guitar at Gearwire.Com.

Cheers
Im gonna be gettin this
Im gonna be gettin this guitar!!! Looks awesome the review shows all! xD
Its a great guitar. The con
Its a great guitar.
The con to it is the "Fat10" bridge. As the reviewer said "I hope I didn't put it out of tune doing that" when he wiggled it.
Since most people won't be using the tremolo bridge anyway I reccomend putting a piece of wood in through the back to lock it in place, just to keep it from going out of tune.
Once locked, it holds its tuning nicely.
Got one... Pickguard?
I got the RG170 in December and it is awesome. Got it with a MG30DFX Marshall amp and it roars... It is in Jewel blue and i like the finish and don't want to scratch it while playing... Does anyone know where i can get a pickguard?
Pickguard
There are no stock pickguards for it. You can buy a blank one and cut holes. A problem could be that it would get too thick.
Also, you'd have to drill holes wich could scratch the guitar much worse.
I would put on a piece of stick-on plastic (clear or with a nice graphic) in the shape of a pickguard on, if you're really afraid of scratching it.
I play without pickguard and haven't scratched it with my pick yet. Wristwatches and jewelry pose more of a threat to the laquer than a piece of soft, rounded tip plastic.
I wouldn't worry about it ;) It doesn't scratch that easy ;) If you really want to keep your guitar in never-removed-from-box state, put it in a glass case and never touch it. ever.
GRG170DX
Awesome guitar sounds great, outstanding quality and it beats everything in its pricerange. I got a blue one but Im getting a blackone too ^^
Fat10 Bridge
I just got this guitar on Ebay- the bridge is not level with the body-I'm thinking I'm missing a spring or maybe need to replace them. Wher do I get the springs? otherwise, how do I make this a hardtail? It sounds great, just want it setup correctly.
Thanks, great review BTW
Springs
It has two springs. If the bridge tips down at the back, they're too tight. If it comes up they're too loose.
Put on the right strings and adjust the springs to get the bridge level.
If you're not planning on using the tremolo, just lock it in place with a piece of wood.
